Fjeldstad said the man, dressed only in a pair of ragged underpants, claims he left Mexico for El Salvador in September 2012 with a companion who died at sea several months ago. Details of his survival are sketchy, Fjeldstad added, as the man only speaks Spanish, but he said his name was Jose Ivan.

Details are sketchy? WTF? Doesn’t anyone down there have a smartphone with google translate?...There is one phone in the government building, probably the only one for a hundred miles in any direction, one airplane owned by the government (currently under repairs, looking for parts from somewhere)and not a WalMart in that part of the world. Sounds like heaven to me. Mexican ought to stay.

“Someone named Jose’ Felipe from Mexico has a friend named Ivan? how weird is that?”

What's wrong with having a friend named Ivan?

I take it you’re not really a major league baseball fan.

Ivan Pudge Rodriguez, Ivan Nova, Ivan De Jesus, Ivan Calderon come to mind pretty quickly.

Okay forget the smartphone. How about an iPad or Kindle or laptop for crying out loud? It’s a research island.

Yea, you're probably right.

Though living in Santa Ana, CA, you'd think I would have seen some examples of this.

His name was Jose Felipe. His friend’s name was Ivan...but he forgot his last name.

Yes, and Mexico makes very good beer, also thanks to Germanic influence.

ever notice how Mexican music sounds like a German polka?

I had been told they picked it up from German immigrants in TX.

This will stick in your head all day! Start singing!

Just sit right back
And you’ll hear a tale
A tale of a fateful trip,
That started from this tropic port,
Aboard this tiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailin’ man,
The Skipper brave and sure,
Five passengers set sail that day,
For a three hour tour,
A three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough,
The tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The Minnow would be lost.
The Minnow would be lost.

The ship set ground on the shore
Of this uncharted desert isle
With Gilligan,
The Skipper too.
The millionaire
And his wife,
The movie star,
The professor and Mary Ann,
Here on Gilligan’s Isle.

(Ending verse)

So this is the tale of our castaways,
They’re here for a long long time.
They’ll have to make the best of things,
It’s an uphill climb.

The first mate and his Skipper too
Will do their very best,
To make the others comf’terble
In their tropic island nest.

No phone, no lights, no motor car,
Not a single luxury
Like Robinson Crusoe
It’s primitive as can be.

So join us here each week my friends,
You’re sure to get a smile,
From seven stranded castaways
Here on Gilligan’s Isle!
