MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -

A Rutherford County elementary school teacher faces animal cruelty charges for shooting her neighbor's cat.

Katherine Duke, a fourth grade teacher at Wilson Elementary School in Murfreesboro, admitted to police she shot the cat Thursday afternoon because she was tired of it using her children's sandbox as a litter box.

The cat's owner rushed it to a veterinarian where the animal had to be euthanized.

Duke, 41, was charged with animal cruelty and booked into the Rutherford County.

She has since been released on a $2,250 bond and is scheduled to appear in court March 4.

> BS, it is their own fault their pets are gone.

Yep, “Gotcha! Your pet messed up my (easily protected) sandbox, now I can kill it.” The owner should have realized that the veneer of civilization in many neighbors is only skin deep. Underneath it many of them lack mercy, and even take pride in being callous (seem to enjoy bragging about killing other people’s pets). The fact that negligent cat owners may have children who love that pet and who will be deeply hurt if it’s killed either doesn’t occur to them, or they just don’t care (not to mention the feelings of the adult). Owner’s fault — gotcha!

> I didn’t say that we bore the perfect image, the fall of mankind has profound impact on the inborn image of God we bear...

As for the religious argument for trivializing the killing of someone’s pet, I recall a passage in the New Testament that says, “And you shall love the Lord your God...[and]... love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” [Mark 12:30,31] Is killing a pet that messes up a sandbox doing that?

I’d cover the sandbox rather than kill my pet, and I’d do that for my neighbor’s pet too. Now if there were a rabid cat in my yard, or a large dog that appeared to be about to attack a child, then I’d kill somebody’s pet — not for a nuisance that’s easily remedied, though (simply by covering the sandbox).

[By the way, I myself don’t claim to love my neighbor as myself. My ethical standards are much lower. I do try to avoid killing their pets, though — on purpose, anyway. I killed a cat with my car a few months ago, as I pulled into my driveway, and still feel bad about it. Negligent owner, yes, but that doesn’t keep me from feeling some guilt. If I’d been more careful with my driving, I might have avoided killing it.]

I just would not want anything to do with anybody that would shoot a cat for going in their sandbox

Mark Levin and Sarah Palin would not do it either

I wouldn't want anything to do with someone that allows their animal off of their property to damage the property of someone else.

Keep your pets on your property. It's the conservative, kind thing to do.

My catz stay inside, and don't trespass or damage other people's property.

Doesn’t sound like cruelty to me... A firearms violation perhaps but unless he intentionally aimed to mame not sure how you get cruelty

Thank You !!!

We are learning from this thread the real heart of some of these folks at FR

These are some of the people that have lead folks to think that Conservatives do not respect or care for animals.

I am taking names

Would you be OK with that

He doesn't get out. I'm a responsible pet owner.

Besides, realistically, here in the real world, catz that are and have been indoor catz all of their life have NO interest in going outside where all the loud dangerous stuff is.

But if he did get out and get killed, it would be my fault, for not caring enough to protect him. And I wouldn't fault anyone for protecting their property.

I live in a rural area that has a lot of houses but no leash law. When dogs come around to do their business or try to get in my trash, I keep a BB gun that I give a couple of pumps, not enough to penetrate but enough to move them along. They do learn.

And it's generally liberals that whine when their irresponsibility causes bad things to happen.

Conservatives accept responsibility, and put blame where it belongs.

On the pet owner.

The fact that negligent cat owners may have children who love that pet and who will be deeply hurt if it’s killed either doesn’t occur to them,

If they value the cat that much they why are they letting it roam the neighborhood where it can get hurt or killed? Sounds like they only value their cat that highly after they find out that their neighbors don't.

Here is some more food for thought or food for cats. Your poor little innocent pet kitty isn't so innocent at all.

From the New York times science page.

The American Bird Conservancy estimates that up to 500 million birds are killed each year by cats — about half by pets and half by feral felines. “I hope we can now stop minimizing and trivializing the impacts that outdoor cats have on the environment and start addressing the serious problem of cat predation,” said Darin Schroeder, the group’s vice president for conservation advocacy.

From Science News Magazine

America’s cats, including housecats that adventure outdoors and feral cats, kill between 1.3 billion and 4.0 billion birds in a year, says Peter Marra of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Washington, D.C., who led the team that performed the analysis.

And this from USA Today.

Cats that live in the wild or indoor pets allowed to roam outdoors kill from 1.4 billion to as many as 3.7 billion birds in the continental U.S. each year, says a new study that escalates a decades-old debate over the feline threat to native animals.

From The Washington Post Health and Science.

Outdoor cats are the leading cause of death among both birds and mammals in the United States, according to a new study, killing 1.4 billion to 3.7 billion birds each year.

Last week, I had to call animal control to pick up a cat that had been hit by a car.

Later that day, a distraught woman came by, asking about her missing cat. It fit the description, and I let her know that because I care about my catz, I don't let them out where they can get killed by cars.

I feel sorry for her loss, and her real pain, but it was 100% self inflicted.

If you love your pets, keep them on your property. Cars have no mercy.

I didn’t trivialize the killing of someone’s pet; I argued against the trivialization of the word “murder”.

Nope — but then, I wasn’t commenting on the killing at all.

The owner is responsible for not preventing the pet from entering somebody else’s yard — and has been more than amply punished by the loss of the pet — but the person who chose to kill the neighbor’s pet (rather than adopt simple remedies like covering the sandbox) is responsible for her actions as well. The one is negligent; the other, unnecessarily cruel. (I mentioned earlier that negligent pet owners may have children who will be deeply hurt if their pet is killed. Didn’t that matter to her?) People have a responsibility to respond to offenses in measured ways, appropriate under the circumstances. The killer of the neighbor’s pet didn’t do that. As a conservative I support holding her responsible for turning a trivial offense into something worse.

So if a bird pooped in the sandbox, the guy could shoot it.

Interesting.

The fact that the pet’s owner is negligent has been conceded. The cat is there in the sandbox. The question then, though, is what do you do about it? Kill the cat or just put a cover over the sandbox? The fact that the owner was negligent won’t take away the pain that killing the pet may cause. Whatever the antecedent causes, at that point you have the power to determine whether it happens or not.

> Here is some more food for thought or food for cats. Your poor little innocent pet kitty isn’t so innocent at all.

I don’t have a pet myself, though I had dogs and cats as a child. I’m well aware of the cruelty of nature, the law of fang and claw — which applies to cats, dogs, birds, everything. I’m not one of those persons who believe pets are good, and human beings bad. To love a cat, for instance, you have to close your eyes to some of the cruel acts of which it’s capable. We attribute those acts to nature, though, and try to put them out of our minds. I like to believe that human beings, though, are capable of being more compassionate. We’re not just predators. We can put ourselves in the places of other creatures, and try not to hurt them unnecessarily.
