From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

I think I got all the firearms, and very sharp knives up and away from grasping hands. I'll have the twins double check me.

Are you going to re-use the dirt from the sweet potatoes?

Yes, for something else, not sweet potatoes again. I’ll also put some Jobe veggie fertilizer spikes in that mix to beef it up.

“I’m gonna have 5 kids between the ages of 2 and 13 in the house for a few hours.”

Hopefully, the 13 yr. olds can keep watch on the 2 yr. old. You and 5 kids, I hope THEY survive YOU. :o)

I planted part of my tobacco in a compost mix that wasn't fully sterilized. I had a bunch of plants sprout in 24 hours that WEREN'T tobacco. Ooops. I need to watch that in the future.

We're going to watch 'How to Train Your Dragon'. They shouldn't be too much trouble. I have lots of kid's movies, because that's what I like to watch.

Do you still have the kids?

I promise to plant tobacco in the cups tomorrow. After going out yesterday, the foot wasn’t good enough today to stand that long on it to get the tobacco and other seeds in the cups. I’ve showered and washed my hair and now I’ll have a bit of Amaretto over ice as a reward.

Just mine, now. Their dad should be picking them up in an hour or so.

That is interesting that you let your cut seed potatoes dry. I always cut them immediately before I planted them and it worked out very well for me. Is this practice because of the Texas soil?

We've got a 90% chance of ice pellets tonight. But the temp is only supposed to get to 35F. Moisture. That's all I care about. We need the water.

My son-in-law just picked up the grandkids. Loved having them. Glad they are gone.

My SIL is the best, though. He brought me a 12 pack of beer.

Will watch small children for beer. HA!

Cornbread and pintos are made.

The kids wanted me to make bread while they were here, so I made a rustic loaf. They ate half of it.

I forgot to load them up on sugar and caffeine before I sent them home though....

Maybe next time.

Have 40% chance of rain tonight - 60% tomorrow, 50s temp. tomorrow, 37 degrees tomorrow night. Don’t get to 32 degrees until next Thursday night if that holds true.

Johnny, hope you get rain tomorrow since I’ve got 60% chance.

How are you cooking the pintos? You read above how I would cook them to save fuel in an emergency situation, however it would work at anytime.

We've got a 90% chance of precip tonight, and I don't care if it comes down as ice pellets. And possible rain on Tuesday.

It's going to be cold here, though. Nights will be freezing all the way through Wed.

I'm stuck inside for a while, it looks like.

Is this practice because of the Texas soil?

I heard it helps the potato to retain mositure, and protect from rot.

The last time I grew potatoes was probably 25 years ago, and I just cut, and planted them. They did fine. I think some people cut them, and dip them in sulfur before planting.

BTW, the ones I cut this morning, already look "sealed" over on the cuts.

Boil and let sit for 30 minutes, drain, then add fresh water. Added ham bone that She left me back in November (it was in the freezer for just this reason). Added jalapeno peppers, onions, my salsa, salt, pepper, and garlic.

I cooked them for about 4 hours.

The cornbread came out of long term storage stuff. I really like using the powdered eggs for making corn bread.

“It's going to be cold here, though. Nights will be freezing all the way through Wed.”

My days will be in the 50s and high 50s and sockmonkey is 40s tomorrow. It's like we live in two different states. You and sockmonkey are closer together than I and rightly are to either of you.

“then add fresh water”

I use canned beef broth instead of water at that point. I don’t use water in any soup - either chicken broth or beef broth or veggie broth. Would you suggest that is a mistake for one reason or another?

No. I just didn't have any broth made, or I would have used it. I prefer chicken broth in my beans. I generally use left-over coffee as well, but I'm not using the coffee pot anymore, just the one-cup Melita filter, so I added extra jalapeño juice. ;)

My tobacco seeds sprouted yesterday 10 days after sowing. I practically needed a magnifying glass to make sure I was really seeing seedlings. They look so delicate I’m afraid to breathe too close to them.

I hope I get at least half a dozen to survive and put out in the garden.
