Amanda Knox Found Guilty of Murder By Italian Court

Amanda Knox was found guilty of murder today by an Italian court, the latest twist in a murder case that goes back to 2007.

The verdict reached by the two judges and six jurors came after several hours of deliberations at the Florence courthouse.

The judge sentenced Knox to 28 years in prison. Her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito and co-defendant was sentenced to 25 years.

Two Italian judges and six jurors began deliberations earlier today. If Knox and her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito are found guilty, the court is also expected to pronounce a prison sentence.

The prosecutor has asked for a 26 prison term for the murder for Knox and Sollecito, plus another four years for Knox on a related libel conviction.

This is the fourth time Knox faced a verdict on the 2007 murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher while they were roommates in Perugia, Italy. Knox, now 26, and Sollecito, 29, were convicted in 2009.

After serving four years in prison they were freed in 2011 when an appeals court threw out the murder conviction. But Italy's supreme court ordered another appeals court to rehear the case. Kercher's sister Stephanie and brother Lyle were in the courtroom for the verdict.

Knox, who is sporting a new, short haircut, remained in her hometown of Seattle for the latest trial. Sollecito was in court today earlier today, but was not present for the verdict....

The worst part is that the guy who committed the murder is already in an Italian prison for murder.

And who are you in all of this???

I am simply one with an opposing view, but am astounded at the amount of time, effort, and snark with which you defend Amanda Knox.

This is another piece of evidence that neither side disputes — that she penned this statement:

Transcript of Amanda Knox’s handwritten statement to police on the evening of November 6, the day she was arrested:

http://www.injusticeinperugia.org/TheInterrogation.html

I see nothing there for which she should have been arrested.

After 6 days of 12 interrogators badgering her and that is the most they could get her to admit to???

Please —

Put a little time and effort into it yourself getting to the facts and you just might be snarky as well.

I'll have to dig to find it.

There are two stories. Amanda first told the police that she met him on a basketball court. In her testimony at trial, she said she was casually introduced to him while in a group of friends, but not on a basketball court. In her testimony, she says she doesn't know why she told the police she met him on a basketball court when first asked.

In the transcripts I've been reading from the trial, I haven't seen anything describing how close they were. Just as you would expect from anything related to this trial, websites differ in describing how close they were. The pro-Amanda sites say she barely knew him. The pro-Meredith sites say Amanda and Rudy were more than just casual friends.

What do you think the explanation is for the DNA overlay chart shown in post 318 (Kirchner’s DNA versus the DNA found on the blade of the Knox DNA kitchen knife)?

My answer is that if this is true then their case falls further apart:

http://www.injusticeinperugia.org/Prosecutionscase.html

When the knife was tested, Amanda’s DNA was found on the handle. This was expected because Amanda often prepared meals and Raffaele’s apartment. She used the knife for cooking.

A sample was taken from the knife blade and was tested for blood. The result was negative. There was no blood on the knife.

This needs to be repeated, THERE WAS NO BLOOD ON THE KNIFE.

What was left of the sample from the blade was tested for DNA. The results were negative. There was no DNA on the blade.

This is when all guidelines for testing DNA were thrown out the window. The machine parameters were over-ridden. The tests kept coming back “too low.”

Then machine parameters were pushed far past the level of reliability finally producing the result they needed. Keep in mind, the test was done in a lab using large amounts of Meredith’s DNA. No negative controls were used.

The result was extremely low, measuring in trillionths of a gram of DNA. The procedures used to get the result they needed were deeply flawed. The DNA found on the knife came from the lab. The knife had no DNA from Meredith Kercher on the blade when it arrived for testing.

The DNA sample was so small that only one test could be performed.

No additional testing will ever be available.

Aw Shucks — we ran out of stuff — you’ll just have to take our word for it.

Well, that's certainly the position taken by the "Free Amanda at Any Cost" people. Don't forget they also argued that the DNA that was "too low" was also "too contaminated" as a fall-back position.

It's amazing that when the machine was pushed past the parameters they needed, it happened to give results that matched exactly with Meredith's DNA, don't you think? The expert who did the DNA test on this knife is also the person who ID's Guede's DNA at the scene. If she's incompetent and lied about Meredith, why should we trust her on Guede?

I'm going to give up on this and move onto something else.

I know you're a man of strong convictions and you're convinced that Amanda Knox is innocent.

I'm not somebody who's convinced of Knox's innocence or guilt. I lean toward her innocence the more I read the Italian trial records (the original source, not the agenda-driven innocence project materials).

I simply disagree with those who suggest there is not now, and never has been, any evidence suggestive of Knox's complicity in the murder of Merdith Kercher.

If she's incompetent and lied about Meredith, why should we trust her on Guede?

That's simple -- they can bring in a whole gaggle of experts to test Guede's DNA again and again and again because they have so much of it from the crime scene.

But they have no more knife material -- so no more tests can be done.

They should have used the same guidelines for both materials and let it stand -- but they didn't.

It's called a double standard. It shows intent on their part to bend what ever rules they had to to get the results they wanted.

Okay, and then I really must go.

I think it exceptionally rude of Meredith Kercher to leave less DNA on a knife blade as Rudy Guede left over an apartment large enough for four.

I read through the first few paragraphs and stopped at the part where the blog says Knox didn’t change her story.

I don’t know if she’s guilty or innocent. But, the fact that she changed her story does not make her come across as innocent.

The Transcript of her statement at the bottom of the page got me —

It didn’t seem at all incriminating.

I wouldn’t want an innocent person to be sent to prison.

But, I’m thinking of Meredith Kercher and her family. If I were in their shoes, I would be very suspicious of Knox - given that she changed her alibi a few times. I wouldn’t be sure if Knox was an innocent person, or if she was a psychopath.

In other words, there is reasonable doubt.

Therefore, the Italians can pound sand.

Prosecutors always say this....we cant forget about the victim they say, news media all say that as well, heard it on Fox all day yesterday and today.

The trial of Amanda and her X, has nothing at all to do with the death of Meredith Kercher

The police already have their man

Imho, that statement reads as if she’s having trouble remembering which lie to tell.

We each are relying on our own experiences. I’ve had experiences with people who lie. They can look and sound so convincing. They tend to change their story because it’s difficult for them to keep track of the lies they tell.

So, her statement reads very differently to me. Maybe she’s an innocent victim. Or maybe she’s a psychopathic liar. I lean more and more to the latter.

It sounds like the police are telling her that they have evidence implicating her and she better fess up, but they didn’t have any evidence.

And the police were lying and telling her that Solecito had
said that they weren’t together that night and that has thrown her for a loop.

Interrogators and lawyers are allowed to lie but not suspects. She didn’t know that and is somewhat confused — but she admits to it.

I don’t know, Uncle Chip.

In the statement, she could be admitting that she’s a little bit confused.

Or, she could be pretending to be confused now that she’s been caught in a lie.
