Kang Wong, 84, was jaywalking on New York Citys Upper West Side on Sunday when police stopped him and attempted to issue him a ticket for the time-honored infraction among New Yorkers. He ended up in a hospital after a police beating.

Everybody Kang Wong tonight
Because scraping your cheek when you fall to the sidewalk is “a beating” when your son is a lawyer.
“Because scraping your cheek when you fall to the sidewalk is a beating when your son is a lawyer.”
So I take it that it’s o.k. with you for the Pigs to knock down an 84 year year old man who doesn’t speak English, just for jaywalking? When I read here about all the “support” for the cops when they beat up the citizens, I realize just how bad off we are if there is ever an internal conflict. The cops will beat the $hit out of anyone and everyone if they are told by their “superiors” to do it, and they will enjoy doing it.
Seriously, he’s lucky they didn’t shoot his dog, and he’s lucky they didn’t give him a forced enema. All in all, they exercised restraint.
And the cops went home safe at the end of their shift which is the important thing.
I know, you or I could restrain an 84 year old man without beating him up, but then we don’t have the training they have.
The officer was writing Wong a ticket.
Wong decided he didn't have to get a ticket, he would just leave.
The officer grabbed mister Wong as he began to sidle off.
Mister Wong then initiated a shoving match with the policeman.
In said shoving match Wong was pushed to the ground where his cheek got scraped.
The officer summonsed more officers and they restrained him, then took him to Saint Luke's hospital.
As far as I know, the officer did neglect to check mister Wong's birth certificate to find out how old he was before writing him a ticket or restraining him, so I guess you might have some sort of point. Wong looks only in his middle sixties to me but I guess they should have to confirm that.
Or something.
Do you think it's important for cops to get home safely?
Dead horses are not allowed to jaywalk either, it’s the law!

After the Rodney King incident I assisted in the training of Cadets in Erie County New York. We demonstrated how to use these tools so that at the end of the day everyone is safe and the bad guys are behind bars with a minimum risk of injury.
Irrelevant to this incident in every way.
Only hands and the sidewalk enter into the picture.
Wow.
With a Communist mayor.
Surprise, surprise.
Whooda thunk it?
Has anyone ever been issued a ticket for jaywalking in NYC? I thought the natural state of things is to cross when you thought it was safe. This is the only libertarian position New Yorkers on the whole embrace.
Nope incorrect. Relevant in every way. The point is that there are numerous ways to subdue a suspect with out causing traumatic injury or grievous harm.
I know all about Jaywalking and the law. The point I am making is that this story keeps getting posted here by cop haters over and over again and changed from a scrape to the forehead to a beating by the police which did not happen.
This is N.Y.! There is always a power play going on between newspapers, police, unions, etc, so a old man falling down becomes ‘a savage beating’ or something.
I personally have the NYPD to be most gracious....if you’re not a New Yorker. On one of my visits to the city I was driving around lost trying to find an address in the Bronx when a cop pulled me over. I explained my problem and he said, “Follow me”, and took me right to the address.
I was an outsider and not part of the constant war going on.
Yeah, the cop haters will call a fall to the pavement a beat down or something and the police will continue to feed the fires. It’s been that way a long time.
“Most police officers receive less than 6 hours of training using the defensive tactical baton during their time at the academy. If they are certified to carry/use the PR24 it is another 8-10 hours. Most Law enforcement agencies do not require recertification, or training beyond that.”
You’ve identified one of the problems. The others are: a wanton disregard for the Constitution and the notion that no matter what “I am going to go home tonight.”
I applaud your desire for LEOs to be properly trained. It need not be like in is down in Mexico, where you are given a gun, free bullets and a car and told to go make yourself a “living.”
I have a very good friend who is AA, who was an LAPD officer in San Pedro for ten years. He finally quit because of the actions he was “required” to take against citizens, many of whom were Black, that disgusted him. He said that it was a policy of “keeping people down.” Keeping the “peace” meant breaking citizens constitutional rights.
