As a survivalist/prepper, I hear a lot of, "I don't want to be a prepper, but I want to be prepared. What should I do? How do I start?" So I compiled a lot of information from FEMA, Red Cross, and other places that have very "basic" information and started typing up a list for them. The four "basic" areas I decided would be a good starting point: getting your whole family involved, what to do before an emergency, what to do after an emergency, and emergency sanitation. I say "basic" because this is only a starting point! This by no means is all you should do. If you think it is because the government will step in ... I feel sorry for you. I tell this to everyone I give this information to and encourage them to research more and be ready for when "it" happens because you won't be able to find me in my secure well stocked locations.

One thing we manger dawgs and other patriotic FReepers won't have to prep for is being a stranger in a strange land, where the formerly smiling natives won't be so friendly anymore. Another thing we won't have to prep for is a dull, rusty Muzzie machete being applied to our throats. Yet another thing we won't have to prep for is trying to survive among people who not only don't speak our language, but who don't share our culture and heritage.
Think you're going to just hop on a plane and jet off to another "friendly" country? Ha...guess again. WTSHTF, there will be nowhere safe for Americans, or in your case, turncoats who used to be Americans. You'll meet your fate on foreign soil...we manger dawgs will meet ours defending our homes, right here on American soil.

First, I like men a lot. However, men tend to think big when it comes to prepping. You will run out of fuel for your generator as well as make noise. I elected for less money spending and no noise and it will last almost forever.
I have a certain solar panel that was not expensive when compared to a generator. (Plus, I am a girl and would probably blow myself up with fuel required for a generator.) A good charger came with the solar panel that will charge any size battery rather quickly (that was another requirement - didn’t want to take days to charge batteries).
I have rechargeable batteries of the sizes I need that will recharge 1,500 times and I have plenty of them. They will give me light for years and I studied so I got the best battery/lantern light (with LED bulbs) to light a whole room with no dark places in the room - can read a book with that light. Got the best flashlights with LED bulbs that will stand up so it’s a lamp in a bedroom or bathroom and has bright setting and punch a button for less bright and click a button and you get a night light. Those batteries also run my fans which give me cooling.
I also have special lanterns that use solar power by themselves to give light. These lanterns are made by a company that sells them to our agencies that work overseas in third world countries. Set them in the sun during the day and they will run all night. These are much more powerful than yard solar lights that are placed around flower beds some people buy to use them indoors and they cost less than those yard ones. I keep one in the window in my bedroom and can just click the button and have plenty of light. I also got a special one by this company that gathers solar during the day and it’s got a magnifier so the light is pin pointed to give extreme light for something you need to do that requires concentrated light.
Maybe your generator can keep your fridge going - I can’t do that but again your fuel is going to run out and my food recipes do not use anything that requires refrigeration. I have powdered milk, egg substitute, etc., so I don’t need anything that requires refrigeration. I would cook amounts of food that would be used in one day so it would not need refrigeration.
I also have black shades made to cut out all light so no light is seen from the outside. These shades are accordion so you use the accordion feature to raise them in the morning and use the clips provided to keep them up. At night, take off the clips, the shade drops down and the light cannot be seen from the outside.
Over the last year or two we have had 2 cans of Dole pineapple blow their pull tab lids. They were in a open top case of 12 stored on a shelf in the rear with nothing stacked on top so the failure wasn't immediately apparent.
And we had several of the 10 oz. cans of Rotel tomatoes with chili peppers go off and start leaking.
Also, we have had a problems with Ronzoni pasta infected with weevils. Due to the infestation we have recently had to toss at least 30 pounds of Ronzoni.
As a precaution against infestation the pasta had all been stored in the freezer for a period of time when we first brought it home. But even after that the pasta developed live weevils.
That tells me that freezing didn't kill all the eggs or larva so we will have to alter or extend the freezing cycle in an effort to safeguard against future spoilage.
Only the Ronzoni brand has had this problem and we have 3 or four other brands stored together. So, needless to say, we have stopped buying Ronzoni.
the first several times we found some boxes infested we called Ronzoni. They would only send coupons for two replacement boxes. After the third time we gave up and just tossed the spoiled product.
Incidentally, the last boxes we discarded had a use-by date of 2016 so it isn't just old product that can be problematic.

The one item I can’t recall ever seeing on these threads is having a large jar of multi-vitamins. Taking a couple of these per day when your food supply is changing keeps a lot of nasty bacteria out of your system.

I can’t recall seeing vitamins on a list either, but there likely was one - or more. I do have big bottles stored in a cool place. Surely, people would think of vitamins.
After my husband married me, he said he thought he knew what high maintenance was but he was wrong. He was laughing when he said it.
What is most peculiar is his saying prepping is “iffy” and all you need is a moderate bug out bag and a passport. That means get the next flight out. Many people will make this mistake, thinking where they are is so bad, it must be better somewhere else, so they leave with no idea how bad the place they are heading might be.
Going from a known entity to an unknown entity could get you killed. A nomad is not looked upon well as when the nomad gets wherever, those people there won’t want to add another to their group. You would have to have a major skill they needed for them not to kill you on the spot.
I repeat there is no way prepping is “iffy”. What a ridiculous statement - it shows no smarts at all. I prepared to exist without utility electric power. What is “iffy” about that? Nothing.
Some people don’t have the guts and fortitude to stay with something until they accomplish the goal. I am not one of those people and I am prepared - are you guys and gals?

I have been told that bay leaves keep bugs from hatching in grains, rice and stuff. Just started using them about a year ago so I do not have sufficient time test.
