The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

I thought you might have seen it. I learned about it on the Garden Thread when Red Devil was pinging the list every week.
The person who posted, was talking about the free seeds. I got a lot of different tomatoes to try out from there.

We have a tom cat wandering the neighborhood who visit my compost pile when ever he’s out. Too cold know to see what he’s left us. He;ll usually swing past my catnip plants on his daily rounds.
We took in a stray kitty almost 4 year ago who immediately blessed us with kittens which we kept. All inside cats. fat & happy.
I want to get the tom cat tested to see if he’s the kitty daddy.
I’ll take a closer look...

Keeping my indoor plants watered is the only gardening happening here in NW Missouri. At present there is a wee bit of moisture falling. My guess is, it is random sleet, as I could hear the pings on the metal roof. The wind was brutal today, but as I walked the dog it seems to have died down significantly.
I have plenty to keep me occupied. I am researching for a dishwasher that will wash dishes without me having to scrub the dishes before I put them in the dishwasher.
I would appreciate any suggestions as to what is the ‘best’ functioning dishwasher presently being sold, without breaking the bank account. I have decided to take my time and get the right one, since I am not needing the dishwasher to clean the canning jars.
Then last evening the microwave flipped out and started beeping and sounding like it was nuking something without anyone touching it. I finally had to unplug it to stop it from flipping out. I plugged it back in to see if maybe that would clear the internals. After five times of attempting to end this possession, I noticed there were words running across the clock screen. It said the keypad had shorted and service was needed immediately. So I went out today and hopefully found a better one, as the microwave gets usage constantly. Especially the reheating of leftovers.
The old microwave is at least 10 years old and it was given to me, used at that time. So I cannot complain that it did not serve us well. The dishwasher however, only lasted three years. Other than the ordeal of finding the right dishwasher for the functions I want at the cost I can spend I am glad it croaked. It was a piece of junk from the get go.
I do hope that all had a safe and peaceful Christmas.
We haven’t used our dishwasher in quite a while. The one downstairs doesn’t empty the water correctly, and it’s just an apartment size 18 inch, so I didn’t want to spend money on refurbishing.
The one upstairs works fine, except the detergent nowadays doesn’t work - EPA restrictions. I can’t remember what you buy at the harware store to add to the wash cycle to take care of that. I just add vinegar to the rinse cycle and it works fine. It’s about 15 years old.
Since our family room is in the basement, we just use the apartment size kitchen most of the time, and wind up washing up by hand. The sink in the basement is the only one big enough for the canning and pressure cookers, and large roasting pans so that’s pretty much our main work area now.
When the kids come in for the holidays, they use the kitchen upstairs, while I use the one downstairs to prepare our various dishes for the holiday feasts.
I have always had great luck with all the Sears Appliances, but again - all my stuff is old as dirt almost.
Try some TSP(tri sodium phosphate) from the paint dept, but don’t get the TSP imitation that sets right next to it. It’s what they took out of detergents in general. Our dishwasher is down and not coming back, But I think that TSP is what used to be in dishwashing detergents too. My wife loves it in the laundry.

I planted the Lemonade blueberries and haven’t had any berries. I think this is maybe going on to the forth year. I was surprised that they keep their leaves on over winter. I made a point of putting lots of fall leaves and grass over their roots and will give them more fertilizer. Maybe that will help.

It was. Fairbanks was well above freezing yesterday and we had 40 for a high near Austin.
It is 16.7 F here in the TX Hill Country right now. It's 35 F in Anchorage, AK.
Is anyone on this forum interested in planting miniature container/theme gardens?
Being unable to be outdoors to play in the dirt, I’ve become interested in this type of gardening and have been collecting ideas and “accoutrements” for use in creating little scenes in tubs or other containers. I’m adding an element of fun to my gardening by making shelters out of twigs, moss and bark for mini garden fairies, gnomes, etc. When the snow goes off, I’ll cruise my garden to see what suitable miniature plants survived.
Thinking of themes for mini gardens is more fun than thumbing through all the catalogs vendors seem to think I need.
We live about 35 miles NW of Austin. It was 29 earlier and is now 31. You must be well to the northwest of us.
I've seen some "kits" at Walmart for miniature themed gardens. They look really cute. I assumed they were for indoors, and my indoors doesn't get enough light for them.
A long time ago, I had a "Wind in the Willows" themed garden area outdoors. It was great fun for a family project.
I am not aware of any like that, but even if you’re the only one, please keep us updated with pictures or links to online examples. We like variety in gardening here, and you might just start a new trend for some of us. It sounds like this is perfect for apartment dwellers and handicapped individuals, also.
We got down to 25 here, is now 27 at 8:15. I had a high of 35 yesterday. 50mi north of Houston
