The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
That’s super. Thanks for the picture and link.
The seeds are in a plastic tent contraption wife purchased last year. It has a two tube grow light with a heating pad to keep things toasty.
We got a late start last year...
“The brown tips could be a fungus, or pest, but I am thinking it might also be from cold.”
Onions were fine but last night she had the cold from hell and that caused onions to turn brown over night.
“the onions should be O K , mine have been burnt back half a dozen time so far this year.”
Glad to know that. I didn’t cover my Walking Onions for last night and that probably has frozen them. The woman who grows them says they will die back in winter and come back every spring. It seems one can’t kill these things and that’s good.
“I think it might have been around Houston? The ice path...”
Yes, I’m 40 miles north of Houston and all of us, including Houston, had ice.
Ours came through a full winter without any protection, with temps down to at least -15, just fine.
Got an email from my favorite nursery over in East Texas. It is a nursery that I have had great service from, and they gave quality products at good prices.
They have a flash sale going on Native fruit & nut trees at $5 per tree.
The sale ends today (Friday).

I've been trying to finish watching all of a very informative lady's youtubes (http://www.youtube.com/user/imstillworkin/videos) that I'd started a couple years ago. She home cans and dehydrates what her garden produces. What I like is she researches everything.
Hi Everyone.
Cold and the ground is covered with a few inches of snow here in Connecticut. Possibly more snow tomorrow.
Trying something new this year, winter sowing. Got some of my cold weather seeds in plastic containers outside in the cold. Hope this technique works as it just seems too easy. I put them out last week before our most recent snow, but that isn’t suppose to hurt plants started this way. May try a few more varieties, just for a lark.
Nothing started inside yet, but most of my seeds are ordered or already here. Going for some different things this year: a hollow tomato, ground cherries, little red eggplants, little green striped eggplants, and pink stalked celery. Put both hard and soft neck garlic in in the Fall, so at least there’s something planted.
Only two more months and maybe I can actually start prepping the garden.
Sounds interesting, do you have a picture, a link, or a name for the tent?
My least favorite precip is ice. Especially when people who don’t know how to drive in it go out out any way. They act like 4 wheel drive allows them to speed down the road like it’s summer time.
LOL.
Thanks, for posting that info.
I think it was Tex Okie maybe? Thanks for the update, especially the pictures. Those little stalks on top are perfect for using in soup!
Thanks for that link!
If you go to the header on the website, it has the native trees listed on sale. But the pictures don’t work right there for me. But the prices are right.
Greetings from Massachusetts. It’s 8 degrees here at 6:22 PM.
