Free Republic | Jan 17, 2014 | greeneyes

Posted on 01/17/2014 5:49:09 AM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Nurseries have them now. The pellets are enclosed in a plastic rectangle box. These boxes sell for about 20 dollars. I save the boxes from year to year and simply replace the pellets. I’ve had high failure rate and high success rate - which I think is based on the seeds I purchase, not the pellets.

Will do. Boy, I would love to have a Meyer lemon!

I haven’t been there before (just Schulz in Marion). A couple of people have recommended Fanick’s & I have been raring to go. lol I am sure this means trouble- NOT a “safe zone” for me.

I just looked..I don’t know what Candy Apple Onions are, and I have onions out the wazoo, but they sure seem to have some I haven’t heard of before.

I also want a pomegranate tree. My old one croaked because I had it in a pot, and forgot to water it enough.

Sorry for the double post, but sock monkey has turned me on to something new (the Rodeo tomato), & consequently, to some detailed information on growing that other new gardeners may find helpful.

Hello KGeorge . . . check your local Lowe’s in the Spring and Summer months for Meyers Lemons. I have seen them in both New Braunfels and San Marcos. I hope this helps.

A Meyer Lemon is #2 on the wish list. Blackberries are #1 and a small fig is #3. The fig was another that bit the dust during construction but don’t know where I’d plant it unless I moved the asparagus. Used to also have grapes and plum trees.

I tried those pellets once about 12 years ago. I got the seeds in them, then a big gust of wind blew them off the back porch table and all over the place. I recovered most, but later I found some tomato plants in pellets growing in the nearby flower beds. They were about 6in. tall and looking very bushy.

I finally gave up on trying to grow a fig tree after 4 failed attempts.

I have two Meyers lemon trees, but not yet had a ripe lemon. One has a lemon growing and about to ripen, though.

Being from the South, I have not yet grown accustomed to the need to plant blackberries, they grew wild there, and I see a few growing here in S E Texas. I think I will have a friend there send us some to get seeds, since I haven’t a clue what variety to buy and my wife is bout out of BB jelly.

We’re in the same boat. We plan to fiddle around with peat moss and a few other things this year but we’re pretty new at working with clay. Will let you know if we experience a revelation!

Hi HopeandGlory...our second home. Thanks for the heads up.

rightly_dividing...Don’t tell me that. DH & I both had fig bushes growing in our backyards-just growing there, when we were kids. I dunno where we’d put it, but...

Never ever buy the Burpee seed starting trays with the dome. It has dried pellets in a tiny starter tray. Most of the pellets won’t rehydrate. The little pot sections are too small and you end up ripping the plants to pieces when trying to get them out. I knew it was a ridiculous purchase last year but I was in full garden mode. Never again. Should have read the reviews at the Burpee site. I’m sticking with the collection of odd recycled free kitchen containers. I see they’ve lowered the price. I wasted $25 on that piece of junk.

A guy that I bought a small fig tree from had three varieties growing behind his house. They were huge.

As a kid, not a fig tree anywhere was safe from me. I would climb into them and sit there eating figs.

Thx for the ClearChannel link. I have Tygress tomatoes in my greenhouse. They’ve been frozen, suffered 120 degree heat when I forgot to open the window, and look pathetic, but are still producing tomatoes.

Tycoon tomatoes are probably my favorite tomato. Lemon Girls/Boys look nice with the tycoons for a salad, or rice dish.

I had fig trees in my backyard..came with the house. I don’t like figs, and finally had to dig up the roots to get rid of them..I would hack them down to the ground, and they’d still come back.

I was going to put my window vent opener that came while I was gone on my greenhouse window today. I must have left my brain in Las Vegas as none of the directions are computing in my brain.

This is funny-besides all the “wear safety glasses” kind of silly warnings, warning #10 says”Do not set up the product if under the influence of alcohol or drugs.” Maybe they sell a lot of those openers in Colorado or something.
