Two games, two players, and two very different decisions sum up the NFLs still-uneasy relationship with concussionsand highlight why the problem isnt anywhere close to going away for the league.

I have read that they were safer with the old leather helmets.
Perhaps safer in that the game was played differently.
The robust helmet and facemask have certainly upped the intensity and location of impact.
Plus faster, stronger, and heavier players.
Harvin needs to retire as well.
You don't see high school or college athletes tackling like that. It is a culture thing inside of Professional football. They have been taught to hit to damage or injure. And it's not right. Proper tackling techniques need to be brought back and taught again and those coaches who are teaching and advocating the headhunting need to be expurgated from the league. Need proof that this is what is happening? Look at the whole 'scandal' in the NEw Orleans Saints organization a couple seasons ago.
Other than that, I have no strong feelings about the subject.
They hammered Harvin. I don’t want to say they were targeting him, but for a while there, I thought the Saints still had Greg Williams on their staff.

Ouch....
the end zone one didn’t seem too bad, but the other one is an artillery shot.
Not true. I know a kid who suffered multiple concussions during their high school football years. Because he was a “star” player the whole system wanted and expected him to play. He will graduate this spring
I chewed the kid’s parents out and told the kid he needed to think about his long term health not his yards per carry. Good luck getting thru to the star player with parents that re live their H.S. years thru their kid
I worry that in a few years he will be sorting boards at the local lumberyard. Then they will call him a slacker, not seeing the damage they created
I would laugh but I can’t afford, to jinx my 49ers. I will laugh after the 49ers win the Super Bowl.
I will say i will enjoy seeing Seattle sit out the first round of the 2014 NFL draft.
Getting the same problems in the NHL. A friend says the protective gear actually has too hard a shell, transferring more impact energy. So the irony is that gear designed to provide more protectioon is actually more dangerous.
He really paid for his contributions last Saturday that was for sure.
I thought he would be out of the game after that first one.
Harvin was great at UF, but after seeing that hit, I really fear for him long-term. I hope for his sake he retires, and has a happy life. It gets harder and harder to enjoy the game, knowing the long-term health implications for the players.
Leather or some sort of other helemt needs to be the norm. When you are protected like they are with that hard shell and steel, it’s way too easy to just lead with their heads. more than half of the tackles these days aren’t even with their arms. They just go flying in there.
I would be curious at the incidences of concussions for Rugby players.
Football is already becoming unwatchable.
when you’re not very big and play with reckless abandon, this happens.
Rush’s prediction will come soon.
It’s all about leftist fags and feminists emasculating males who enjoy participating in and watching football, boxing, etc. May they all go to Hell.
Harvin is very talented, but I questioned his longevity when he came out of UF because he is not very big and he took too many hits. Another play of similar build and talent is Desean Jackson of Philadephia who is about the same build and lightning quick and he has gotten blasted more than once and I question how long he will last.
The reverse of that is a player like Darren Sproles or Santana Moss. Both are very small by NFL standards, but they both seem to survive the beatings.
I agree with the poster talking about teaching tackling techniques. Proper form tackling is wrapping up and taking them down - not using your body as a blunt force missile. The irony is that you see as many DB’s lay themselves out trying for these knockout blows as you do receivers!
The NFL is a very rough game and it will always be like that, but the league must continue to modify play or they risks the entire business for the sake of hard hits.
My daughter’s then boyfriend lost an appointment to West Point because of a hs rugby concussion.
The Jamaal Charles removal showed how extreme this “cautious” approach has become. And it is all driven by the NFL’s fear of LAWYERS.
