President Barack Obama is set to speak on Thursday about how he will target job creation, housing, law enforcement and education in the poorest U.S. communities, part of his pledge to narrow the gap between rich and poor in America.
Obama signaled last month that he plans a new focus this year on income inequality, which he called "the defining challenge of our time", pushing to raise the minimum wage and find new ways to help poor children break out of the cycle of poverty.
As part of this effort, Obama will create "promise zones" in San Antonio, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, southeastern Kentucky, and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, the White House said on Wednesday.
The announcement came on the 50th anniversary of a pledge by former President Lyndon Johnson to wage a "war on poverty" which led to government programs like Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, and Head Start preschool education programs.

Nothing like going into areas where too much government is the core reason for their poverty and adding even more government.
Hey B O, what about DETROIT??
And we all know how much an Obama promise is worth.
How does the Choctaw Nation rate over the dozens of other deeply impoverished Indian tribes?
“Being white in Philadelphia” article author was singled out by the mayor for criticism.
Since it is Obama and Philly’s going to get more fed money, the mayor is A-OKAY that the city has humongous poverty problem.
But we all know Philly is broke.
Obama and “promise” in the same sentence: What is this, some sort of joke?
I wish Gov Perry would kick 0’s skinny @zz out of Texas. I’m sure this socialist-push appearance is a joint venture between 0 and San Antonio’s LaRaza Mayor Julian Castro.
If Mayor Nutter singles you out, you’re doing something right.
Philly is doomed because Blacks destroyed it.
How much is THIS gonna cost?
High stakes bingo? :)
Get ready for another Obama teleprompter-read speech full of vague cliches like “we’ve all got to work together to break the cycle of poverty”, “this problem needs to be solved”, blah, blah, blah. Plus lots of bashing “heartless” rich, Republicans and right-wingers.
Oh, and there will also be zero concrete ideas for how to actually accomplish any of this. And not one memorable phrase.
And then Big Leftist Media will all proclaim what a marvelous speech it was.
With these turkeys, this pattern is as predictable as the sunrise.

On the San Antonio news last night, they showed local black leaders brainstorming how to help the largely black East Side, which is the “Promise Zone”.
One lady (not councilwoman Ivy Taylor) whose name I never saw was saying they wanted to attract businesses like architectural, and engineering firms which have employees, but not clients who actually have to come to the buildings.
I thought, “I doubt even the tax incentives, and other promises for those businesses are going to get them to relocate to that area.”
By the way, the last time I recall, the “gonna bring an economic boon to the East Side” was the building of the AT & T Center..Ah, yes, people will be dining, shopping, and lingering.
Most people go to watch the Spurs, or whatever event..Stock Show and Rodeo, and then get the heck out asap.
The regional governors now have direct control over their territories.
Grand Moff Ubama
You mean all the Democrat-controlled hell-holes in the USA?
Send them more money Obama, that’ll help...
I can’t STAND Mayor Castro. He looked and sounded pathetic at the New Years eve countdown. Hopefully some of the cruddy democrat governing results are catching up with him. San Antonio has turned hardcore left and it has me wanting to move if this can’t be reversed.
So, are these like Jack Kemp’s “enterprise zones” or the ones Rand Paul discussed a week or 2 (or more) ago? Obummer is now coming out and saying this is his idea???
Because San Antonio spends tax dollars so well....

Nothing demonstrates poverty any better than than that.
