The operative fact is that you waited for the coldest temps in 25 years to experiment. I understand, cabin fever . . . but that’s what the beer is for . . . .

I learned a lesson from this experiment, never hit the clean button buy a new stove.

Or just clean it more than once a decade.

Ovens don’t clean themselves. That’s why we need immigration reform.

You have to scrape all loose stuff first. And there is usually a locking handle to prevent you from opening the door.

this was user error. The clean function turns everything to a grey ash easily wiped out. It is a great function.

It’s a good idea to clean the oven regularly. Also, not to do it on a really cold day, just in case you get some smoke during the last stage of the cleaning.

After waiting ten years, you probably had about half an inch of fat and burnt stuff layered all over the inside. I don’t know, because I’ve never seen an oven that went that long without cleaning.

The self cleaners are good for finishing the job, but I’d use an oven cleaner first, wait for it to work, and then swab it out, before running the auto-cleaner.

The ‘clean’ feature is often an auto-destruct button on many stoves. It raises the oven temp to over 600F for several hours and locks the door.

You need to get in there with EZ-Off and put in some elbow grease instead.

hahahahaha!

I didn’t fare much better. I don’t use the self cleaning on my oven because when I did, it took a couple of days of fooling with it for it to finally unlatch. The latch release button was useless.

I keep a sheet of foil under the bottom element and change the foil out every month or so and if anything gets on the sides I just clean it the old fashioned way.

Pffft on it!

Pssst, did you read the user manual first?

Or is it, 5 years later, I am too lazy to find the original user manual?

Hehe. I cleaned mine after six years, just a couple months ago. Dang that oven was clean! After a few hours with the windows open, I was one happy homeowner.

Bored? Take up whittling.

Pour some vinegar on the end of towel. Grab the dry end of the towel and spin it like you’re going to rope a calf. This will help to get rid of the smokey smell.

If you're a single guy, cleaning the oven after 5 years should finally get rid of the factory coating and some dust, plus if you have mice in the house, it may get rid of old mouse corpses and nests in the stove and surrounding metal too.
Oh and DO be certain you remove your hidden guns and ammo before you hit clean. Just sayin'.

Perhaps you should clean it a little more often? Clean it in warmer weather when it works to have the windows open for some hours.

We recently (tried to) broil some steaks in the oven. Nice little filets from Omaha Steaks, a Christmas gift. FLAMES AND FIRE. Maybe due to the bacon wrap? Too close to the broiler?

My daughter wanted to use the fire extinguisher on them, and I said, NO WAY, not wanting to sacrifice the steaks. They ended up fine, and the smoke odors were pretty well cleared out of the house after 3 or 4 days.

Back when my first husband and I moved out of our first apartment in 1981 after 3 years, the landlord came and inspected everything, checked the oven. He was a proud Asian immigrant, probably quite successful with his few small apartment buildings. He said, “I no give you back the whole damage deposit. I keep $5 because you no clean the oven”. I remember thinking DEAL, could barely buy a can of oven cleaner for the $5, and this was before the self-cleaning type.

And, kids, never put a model car into a slightly warm oven to dry the paint if your mom is about to make a cake..
