Perhaps you should clean it a little more often? Clean it in warmer weather when it works to have the windows open for some hours.

We recently (tried to) broil some steaks in the oven. Nice little filets from Omaha Steaks, a Christmas gift. FLAMES AND FIRE. Maybe due to the bacon wrap? Too close to the broiler?

My daughter wanted to use the fire extinguisher on them, and I said, NO WAY, not wanting to sacrifice the steaks. They ended up fine, and the smoke odors were pretty well cleared out of the house after 3 or 4 days.

Back when my first husband and I moved out of our first apartment in 1981 after 3 years, the landlord came and inspected everything, checked the oven. He was a proud Asian immigrant, probably quite successful with his few small apartment buildings. He said, “I no give you back the whole damage deposit. I keep $5 because you no clean the oven”. I remember thinking DEAL, could barely buy a can of oven cleaner for the $5, and this was before the self-cleaning type.

Up here in the Semi Free State of NH we Broil our Steaks on the front porch even in the midst of winter or pan fry them in olive oil and butter and serve with fried Onions and Mushrooms and a side.
