You have to scrape all loose stuff first. And there is usually a locking handle to prevent you from opening the door.

this was user error. The clean function turns everything to a grey ash easily wiped out. It is a great function.

Not as bad as my brother-in-laws though. Bought a new stove, put a pizza in to try it out. Somehow put it on clean. And it has a “safety” lock bar on the thing so you can’t open it while it is cleaning. Four hours later his pizza was “done”. It did not ruin the stove though!
