Potassium Iodide is a salt which when taken in the proper amounts, can block the uptake of radioactive iodine. It is frequently marketed in tablets, under the name of Iosat. Administering Iosat can be very beneficial because the thyroid can be quite vulnerable to radioactive iodine in a radiologic emergency, and because this strategy can benefit us in the prevention of later thyroid cancer.

I have been taking Iodoral for about two years now. I feel ten years younger. My joints aren’t as stiff, my mental clarity is better. I hate any report, like this one, that causes a run on iodine. The price on Amazon spikes. And sometimes, it even becomes unavailable. Now we keep a year’s supply for both my wife and me.
Don’t take it orally. Use it on the skin and your body will absorb what it needs.
At first, try a very, very small dot and if you get a welt or reaction, back off and talk to your doctor.
In fact Iodine allergies are extremely, extremely rare, all but impossible. Most times people might think they have iodine allergies it is an allergy to certain fish proteins.
People just aren’t “allergic” to elements. Elements are far, far too small for the immune system to even see.

Most times a reaction to iodine is your body waking up and finally getting rid of stuff that shouldn't have been there in the first place. This is especially true if you eat a lot of processed food or swim in chlorinated water.
Xactly. A detox reaction, like from MSM.
As always, appreciate the ping to info.
Some of the shellfish “alergies” are left over toxins from “red tides”. When an all clear is given after a red tide event some shelfish will retain some of the toxins for a period of time.
what is the dosage How long does one take it? Thanks
I had to explain to my hypocondriact sister-in-law how iodine works.
The Thyroid picks up iodine in your system. I radioactive iodine is present the thyroid will also pick it up.
By taking the suplement, you saturate your thyroid so it cannot pick up the radioactive iodine.
Thirty eight years ago I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid. I chose the radioactive iodine treatment rather than the surgery, so my thyroid is dead and I take Synthroid and Levithroid suplements.
For several years after the treatment, my thyroid would register on a geiger counter, but it does not do it any more.
“If you have an iodine allergy (fish, shrimp, shell fish) it will kill you.”
Yes, it will. I have the pills for two people but I can’t take them. They would surely kill me so I would have to take a chance to stay out of the fall out.
WARNING! There is a skull and crossbones on the bottles for a reason.
“In fact Iodine allergies are extremely, extremely rare, all but impossible. Most times people might think they have iodine allergies it is an allergy to certain fish proteins.”
You are wrong. The hospital put a bit of iodine just under my skin and that spot reacted quickly and before it was over that place on my arm had killed skin and muscle and the wound had to heal from the inside out. I have no color on that spot as it killed pigment in that spot. My medical record says never to use iodine on my skin or inside my body.
Shrimp, clam, and crab made me deathly ill and I haven’t eaten any of that for years. Any product that has kelp in it, makes my skin turn red and I have chills and nausea for three days. I take my own shampoo and conditioner to the beauty shop so I won’t get a product on my skin that has kelp in it. That happened one time years ago and I scrubbed my hair and scalp but still had the chills and nausea.
I have met other people who have this same allergy so it is NOT rare.
Iodine in the form of KI will NOT kill you. You’d be dead already if you did not have elemental iodine in your body. “Iodine allergy” is a misnomer. One is allergic to the protein complexed with the iodine, not to the iodine ion.
You have no idea what you are talking about. The iodine in the KI molecule dissociates as an ion, is taken up by the thyroid gland, saturating the gland, thus "blocking" uptake of any subsequent iodine that you are exposed to. The thyroid gland cannot distinguish between the different isotopes of iodine. KI will block all isotopes of iodine. BTW, the half life of 114-I is on the order of a few seconds, so thyroid cancer directly from this isotope is impossible. It will be decayed into its daughter isotopes well before it even gets into your body.
How about an underactive thyroid? My wife suffers from that, so bad that when she was pregnant years ago, tests showed NO throid activity. Obviously, the test was wrong, but that is how low her thyroid functions.
Radioactive iodine, in the form of 131-I, is a standard treatment in thyroid cancer, following thyroidectomy, extending lives, not killing or disabling them. 123-I, another iodine isotope, is used to image the thyroid gland, helping patients, not killing or disabling them. Sheesh.
***How about an underactive thyroid?***
My daughter has that. We both take supplements.
I was taught that a baby, born with an underactive thyroid will grow up to be mentally handicapped, called a cretin, if not diagnosed and supplements given. My daughter developed an underactive thyroid in her teen years as she is a perfectly normal adult.
don’t use this it has alcohol in it. buy Lugol’s. You can pick it up at a number of places, mainly I find it on line at jcrows or swansons.
“If you have an iodine allergy (fish, shrimp, shell fish) it will kill you.”
Not true. There’s essentially no such thing as an iodine allergy. The symptoms one gets from consuming seafood are actually detox symptoms from consuming iodine, which is a highly effective detoxifier. Most people are loaded with toxic halides which mimic iodine and attach to iodine receptors. When you consume iodine, the toxins dump into your system and cause “allergy” symptoms. The solution is to drink 1/2 tsp of UNREFINED salt in warm water. the chloride in the salt attaches to the toxins and removes them from your body.
