I wonder if any of you have started blackberries or other fruit like that, from the plants a grower sends you? I have three of them, each planted in a large container in new potting soil mix and I followed what they said as how to plant them.

Each one has roots, a base and three sticks. The sticks are just sticks doing nothing. Yesterday, I gently with a fingernail barely got some outer “wood” color off and it is green under there with all of them. The very top of the sticks look dead. I wonder if the tops should be cut off? And, if that is true, maybe do it after what is likely the last frost? Or do I just leave them alone?

Just leave them alone. Don’t cut anything right now.

They will come out when it warms up for good in the spring. IF they come out and you’ve got a scheduled freeze you need to cover them up for that night though.

In general though, just leave them be for right now. They’re dormant and sleeping.

When did you plant these out?

They just look dead. The new growth will come out in the spring on 2cnd year canes. We usually trim ours in the fall.

We have wild blackberries that are all up and down our driveway, but that’s about it. I don’t do anything to them, except to keep them from overgrowing and scratching our vehicles.
