Architect Macy Miller had a big idea: Build a tiny house.
After dealing with a messy foreclosure, the 30-year-old sought a way to have a place of her own while avoiding the mortgage trap. Her solution: Build a micro home.
"I wanted a way to escape dependency on banks without being a 'renter,'" the Idaho resident told Yahoo in an email. "I like having my own space to make my own, which is difficult to do without taking out a large mortgage."
Miller began to build a 196-square-foot house in 2011, right on a flatbed truck. The cost: $11,400. The handy Miller did most of the work herself, with advice from her friends and father as needed.
Miller did need some extra help last August: While working on her roof, she fell and broke her foot and her back in two places. She says she has since recovered from her injuries.

I’ve always liked that idea too. Start small, and add to it as you go. So much will depend on a clever design. One where you can easily add segments to it. And one that makes the most of natural sources of energy like solar. Orientate it such that maximum sunlight is received on a portion of it (for winter), shade on another for summer. Just basic common sense, practical stuff like that.
Or maybe he did, and that's why there's no record of their being one.
She’s young. It sounds unusual, but she built herself a tiny studio apartment. Her rent is probably very low, and she’ll amortize the construction costs. Cool, so far.
Now, it is a bit small for a family, and she is pregnant. If she and the boyfriend and the baby are still there next year... well then it will be passing from unusual into strange territory.
In this case, I would call it a park model camper. They have been around for a long time, but there is certainly a lot of innovation in the design. If she has any business sense, maybe she can start a company making park models that don't look like all the other park models. But I want a flush toilet in mine. None of this crap composting toilet crap.

Most of the time these have “composting toilets.” Aka “poop in a 5 gallon pail.

There was a trailer called a Park Model.
I have one set up at a lake near Raleigh. The carrying costs are almost nothing. It is very tempting to pack my suitcase, sell everything else and move.
Love it, it’s gorgeous.
I live in a modular myself, and have a 4 unit rental building that is modular construction. I also have a rental house that was a kit home. It’s a cash box.
I just like tweaking architects, been around too many of them.
