Its the kind of thing that makes you want to join the dark (blue) side. Every year, the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department runs the newest crop of donut-holders around Fontana Speedway. With no significantly new entries available, its no surprise that the results are fundamentally the same as they were last year.
Im not exactly sure what the justification is for using lap times to rank police vehicles, but we live in an era where police get to do pretty much whatever they want. Why not run em around a track? Some of the significant laptimes:
Ford (Taurus) Police Interceptor: 81.25 seconds Chevrolet Caprice PPV 6.0 (355hp tune): 81.97 seconds Dodge Charger HEMI AWD: 82.19 seconds Ford (Explorer) Police Interceptor: 85.58 seconds Chevrolet Tahoe PPV: 91.71 seconds

The speed limit was never exceeded during this test, was it? That’s against the law, you know ... /s
Now, there was an interceptor...
2 mile track in 81 sec is about 90 mph average. I assume from a standing start.
Hhmmm.... I expected more info on why turbos beat bigger motors. General rule of thumb going back to Henry Ford was, “There is no REplacement for DISplacement.”
Supercharges and Turbos just being a means of adding “virtual” displacement to the engines cycle.
And yeah, a 4.0l with a 2.0l turbo rig will probably out perform a 5.4l...
At least, from my limited understanding of what they are doing. I’m not up to speed on a lot of the power-tuning they’ve been doing.

I’d sure like to take my Mustang GT out there with them.
At the PRI show last week Ford had a 32 roadster hot rod with that turbo V6 installed. Looked nice but fussy, as most modern engine compartments are.
They have unmarked Mustang State Police patrol cars here in Indiana (Camaros too). All the cops complain there isn’t enough room inside.
Agreed, everything about him is depressing but there’s nothing depressing about fast cars.
90 mph is okay but I liked your 200 mph Corvette post yesterday, he was pickin’ em up and puttin’ em down. :-)

I’m 235 pounds and 6’. I couldn’t get in my Mustang if I was wearing a cop belt.
You keep your foot in that Turbo for any length opf time and the motor is not going to last as long as the Cubic inch displacement engine.
Ford’s greatest towing capacity in their F150 is from a turbo-charged 3.5L V6.

Buyers MUST look at more than a lap time, turbos are expensive to replace, a cops office is a cruiser. Unless it’s a take home that ride is moving 24/7 with a different driver on each shift. Driver on days, drives like a human. Driver on swings is more cruising. Drivers on graves is lead foot Louie the LEO.....ergonomics , accessories like laptop racks, shotgun and rifle racks, radios and electronics associated with wiring harness , alternator and batteries.
How will it corner and brake , cooling etc .... The seating is or isn’t designed for wear and tear from duty gear..... Suspension for city, rural roads....potholes, curbs.
Turbo is great for acceleration yet displacement is easier and cheaper to maintain per my experience for such vehicles.
Accessories package for the vehicles included...? pit and bull bars ? Ballistic and bio hazard (spit) cage ? Plastic back seat with handcuff and hog tie retention, dark tint for prisoner cage (innocent till proven guilty ride)..... Lots more than just a cool turbo IMO.
Got to get long term bang for the taxpayers buck..... Good read, stay safe !!
Ha! I'm 235 and 6' 1" and drive this 122 miles every weekday. Fits like a glove and plenty of leg/head room.
That looks like the car in the first mad max movie kinda.
Do you wear a belt with a gun or two, magazines, handcuffs, flashlight holder, and a glove pouch?
My Mustang fits me like a glove too, but I don’t wear all that stuff in the car.
Oh.
No. Not really. No.
With a turbo, you can choose not to engage it simply by 'babying' your gas pedal. The flexibility is fantastic. The boost turbos provide is incredible when you need it.
