Southern Discomfort: U.S. Army seeks removal of Lee, ‘Stonewall’ Jackson honors

Revisionist history would remove portraits of Confederate legends

The U.S. Army War College, which molds future field generals, has begun discussing whether it should remove the portraits of Confederate generals, including Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson.

The college, nestled in rural Pennsylvania on the 500-acre Carlisle Barracks, is doing an inventory of all its paintings and photographs with an eye toward rehanging them in historical themes to tell a particular Army stories.

During the inventory, an unnamed official — not the commandant, Maj. Gen. Anthony A. Cucolo III — asked the administration why the college is honoring two generals who fought against the United States, according to college spokeswoman Carol Kerr.

“I do know at least one person has questioned why we would honor individuals who were enemies of the United States Army,” Ms. Kerr said. “There will be a dialogue when we develop the idea of what do we want the hallway to represent.”

She said one faculty member took down the portraits of Gen. Lee and Gen. Jackson, and put them on the floor as part of the inventory process. That gave rise to rumors that the paintings had been removed.

“This person was struck by the fact we have quite a few Confederate images,” she said, adding that the pictures were put back on a 3rd floor hallway.

34 we are witnessing Cultural Genocide. I wonder when the American version of the Taliban attempt to destroy the carving on Stone Mountain. ...

My thoughts exactly. With nearby Atlanta being 52% black, it makes 1 wonder. The carving was completed in 1972. It features the largest bas relief sculpture in the world, the Confederate Memorial Carving depicts three Confederate leaders of the Civil War, President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson (and their favorite horses, "Blackjack", "Traveller", and "Little Sorrel", respectively). The entire carved surface measures 3 acres (12,000 m2), about the size of two and a quarter football fields.

I know, but it was too good to resist. His image is on the distinctive insignia.

why aren’t we out there protesting demanding our independence like the people in Ukraine, Egypt, Georgia etc. did and achieved their freedom?

we sit here and take countless abuses from Obama, democrats and their news media. democrats/socialists steal our income , our freedom and we do nothing.

General Lee was said to have said the day General ‘Stonewall’ Jackson died, “My Right Arm has been severed!”

He (Lee)probably lost the war when that happened.

Lee and Jackson’s portraits have never been an issue until NOW. Everyone understood innately why their portraits were displayed. They were courageous, audacious, masterful military leaders - and they were Americans who fought for something they believed to be right. They put their honor and lives and the line regardless of personal cost.

Even if you thought their cause was wrong, there is no denying their character, courage and brilliance.

Their portraits should be displayed if for no other reason than to remind our future military leaders that the U.S. Army was held at bay, even put on the run, for about three years (until the crush of number and supplies finally began to exert its weight) by Lee and Jackson, with forces much smaller and not nearly as well equipped, demonstrating that it is not always the best equipped army, or the largest army - no, rather it is the army that is well-led that can make the difference.

So are they going to rename all the forts named for Confederate generals?

Robert E. Lee was the greatest of all American generals. Bar none.

That’s novel.

I’ve never before heard anyone suggest that Lee did not possess good character.

How about Ft. A. P. Hill, VA? Fort McClellan, AL would be the insult

Given that statement I’d put good money on Ms. Kerr being the “unnamed official” who grieved the pictures to the Obama Administration.

Ya see, General? The funny thing about CIVIL WARS is that the same nationality fights on BOTH sides! Sheesh! That guy got promoted a few times too many.

Here in Alabama MLK day and Robert E. Lee’s birthday fall on the same day,holiday-wise.

so people can celebrate whichever one they prefer, or just have a day off for the low-information types.
