METAIRIE, La. -- 'Tis the season for Santa mall portraits and kids riding a toy train around a massive holiday display inside Lakeside Shopping Center.
However, the designer is once again ruffling feathers. The Gretna-based firm made light of Hurricane Katrina and now it's setting its sights on the Affordable Health Care Act.
At first glance the candy canes, whistling children's train and snow-covered Christmas display appears harmless. Until you look twice. "Oh my goodness. I'm lost for words basically," said New Orleans resident Tamany Diaz.
"People need to see that," said Metairie resident Joe Duhon. Whether you agree with it or not, part of this year's Lakeside Shopping Center holiday display targets the Affordable Health Care Act. "What does that have to do with Christmas?" Diaz said. "That's my question."
"It's amazing what you can get away with nowadays doing a Christmas scene in the middle of a mall," said New Orleans resident Donald Brisset.
Frank Evans is the landscape architect behind the unconventional holiday season satirical designs, a tradition marking its 18th year. "We build the train display for the kids, but adults come looking for the satire," said Evans.
This year's depiction of President Obama's Affordable Care Act is complete with a long line of waiting patients, a coffin and a hearse.

PING!!!!
Worth a trip to the Mall, don’t ya think?
Ah good ol’ Lakeside.
I have shopped there many, many times.
I don’t recall seeing all sorts of Christmas decorations there, but my favorite was when Maison Blanche used to do them when I was a kid.
They had a really nice touch.
Take some pictures. This is how you push-back at the Left, with ridicule. No wonder the lefties are hatin’ it!
Make sure Louisiana voters know that Mary Landrieu supported it (and continues to support it).
I hope he has some sort of vague reference to Mary in the
display. Like a small canned ham, maybe. :-)
“Certain shoppers” aren’t amused! Not taking about the white ones!
Upside down clock?
The upside-down clock is a nice touch!
They would only like it if it was a shrine to Dear Leader. F them.
“Jingle, jangle, jingle... here comes Mr Bingle, with another message from Chris Kringle”.
Maison Blanche was the place for Christmas!
Yes, it's the same people who complain incessantly in NOLA.com's comments section about the lack of re-development in New Orleans East. Hey, *they* killed that part of the city. All Katrina did was float the carcass around.
Obamacare is the Grinch that stole Christmas.
How can anyone enjoy Christmas when they know their insurance runs out on the 31st of December.
Especially those receiving treatments for cancer or are in the hospital.
How do you think it feels to be in the hospital on the 31st. knowing you are going to be screwed by Obamacare next morning?
It was just great :D
I have some really great memories going their with my mom as a young boy.
She loved Christmas, it was the best time of year every year, and those are some precious memoires for me :)
Same here... America was still America and kids were allowed to be kids.
I love the hearse.
A sharp entrepreneur should print up a stock of “Death Panel” t-shirts and rent a kiosk.
Haven’t been there yet this year, but I recall the post-Katrina display. It was great, and the kiddies didn’t notice, or ‘get’ it. Adults did, and everyone I saw really appreciated the irony of tiny,taped-up refrigerators and debris. These decorators have chutzpah, KUDOS to them and Lakeside management for going with it. ( Hope they don’t cave into pressure)!
Sure to be vandalized in 3...2...1
Yep, exactly.
That place will always live in my mind.
That was when Red Dawn was a damn good movie, and it meant something.
That was when America stood for something worthy, now she has become something I can no longer even recognize. It really is very sad.
