Using the South Pole Telescope, scientists observed patterns known as "B-modes," which occur when a massive object bends a light source, like a lens. These B-modes interacted with matter from very early in the history of the universe, some 400,000 years after the Big Bang.
John Carlstrom, the S. Chandrasekhar Distinguished Service Professor in Astronomy & Astrophysics at the University of Chicago, lead the research team. The multi-institutional team published their work Sept. 30 in the journal Physical Review Letters.
"The detection of B-mode polarization by South Pole Telescope is a major milestone, a technical achievement that indicates exciting physics to come," Carlstrom said in the release.

What was there before the start of the universe ?
Before matter and time existed ...
John 1
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
There was never a start, because something would have had to already exist. Funny how many can accept an eternal universe, but not an eternal God.
Thanx .. I’m a tenor.
Another Universe (multiverse?) that we came to existence from after a singularity happened there.
Their thinking is Mobial
Thing to ask is where the first molecules came from that went bloowie .....
Why can't the author say the effect is due to gravity.
Here we go again. The latest and greatest discovery which is going to revolutionize science and finally explain the origin of the Universe.
And there will be another one in a few months.
According to theory, there were no molecules in the very beginning of the universe. There weren’t even atoms yet, only energy and an assortment of fundamental particles.
Well something had to bring all that together to ignite or whatever. Then too, how can energy (of what sort) could assemble the odd assortment of fundamental particles and compress them enough to explode out; then it also follows how large was the mass considering what’s out there in the universe now?
The particles at least came after the big bang. They are supposedly a byproduct of it. It all involves the evolution of the 4 fundamental forces: Gravity, Electromagnetic, Weak and Strong (forces). They think that at earlier stages of the universe these 4 were a single force. They have already created enough energy in experiments to joint 2 of them as one, maybe even 3? Not sure about that.
Who cares?
What difference does it make?
Whatever creative force exists to do this, my feeling is universes (multiverses) are born, expand, and then everything contracts and comes back to the point of singularity, whereupon the whole process is born again, ad infinitum.
The whole point, it would seem, of the creative force would be creation.
Different systems are born each time around, perhaps featuring different laws (like laws of physics) that govern it's existence.
We're a microscopic dot in a vast sea (universe) of creation, and since it operates on the micro as it does in the macro, it is an ever-continuing cycle of birth, life and death.
The life force is not possible without the creative force, just as the creative force is not possible without the life force.
Life everlasting is the rule of the universe. Just because something endures a physical death does not mean the life force itself is extinguished. On the contrary, the soul, outward manifestation of the life force, is itself immortal.
This is a deep subject that would require a tome unto itself.
Let's just say this creative force, however you want to describe it, is indeed the Alpha and the Omega, but only in the sense that mortal minds can grasp and accept it.
In reality, there is no beginning, nor is there an end.
CA....
What was there before the start of the universe ?
There was no there there.
But current evidence shows that, not only is the universe expanding, but it's doing so at a faster and faster rate. They thought previously that the expansion would continue at a slower and slower rate while never actually coming to a stop, ultimately reversing. So in either scenario the expansion would go on forever.
Potential...
