HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. (December 9, 2013) A 16-year-old Noblesville girl who was shot in the chest Sunday evening died from her injuries.
Noblesville Police and Hamilton County Sheriffs deputies responded to the scene in the 8200 block of River Run Place at 11:20 p.m.
They found four people inside the residence and the victim unresponsive. She was transported by ambulance to St. Vincent Hospital (Indianapolis) where she later died.
The victim, Aubrey Peters, was a Noblesville High School student. FOX59 viewers may remember her for rescuing two children from a pond in March 2010, a heroic act that earned her and her family honors from the Red Cross.
Officers spoke with the other people who were in the home during the shooting and arrested 20-year-old Jacob McDaniel early Monday morning. Hes charged with reckless homicide (Class C felony) and pointing a firearm (Class D felony).
According to court documents, McDaniel and a group of friends were hanging out at his house Sunday night. He eventually went upstairs to retrieve a handgun and brought it downstairs. He tried to get Peters to hold it, but she didnt want to. McDaniel then dropped the magazine from the gun, pointed it at Peters, took the safety off and pulled the trigger, one witness said. A shot rang out and hit Peters in the chest.
What just happened? the witness recalled Peters saying after shed been shot.
The witness told police that McDaniel said, The story is the gun fell off the table and went off. That witness then tried to provide aid to Peters until help arrived.
When interviewed by police, McDaniel said he began showing off and while he had the gun pointed at her, he pulled the trigger, thinking the gun would be empty.
McDaniel appeared in court Monday afternoon.
Noblesville High School Principal Jeff Bryant said his students and staff are mourning the loss together.
Aubrey was a great student, a quality student here at Noblesville High School. She walked around the building with a smile on her face, Bryant said.
Bryant said guidance counselors were in Aubreys classroom Monday to talk about the tragedy and will be available for all students and staff who need someone to talk to.
A horrible tragedy. Once more for the record:
The 4 Laws
I. All guns are always loaded.
II. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
III. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
IV. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
-Colonel Jeff Cooper
Safety first. Some folks just don’t seem to understand that. Their big problem is they end up hurting someone else.
Punk
The 4 Laws
I. All guns are always loaded.
(My version is slightly different: ASSUME all guns are always loaded.)
II. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
III. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
IV. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
Oh yeah, and to add one more: JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE DROPPED THE MAG DOES NOT MEAN THERE IS NOT A ROUND IN THE CHAMBER!
Those sneaky guns. That barrel just loads itself whenever you drop the magazine, don’t it?
Now the immature snot has to live with this for the rest of his life.
Prayers up for everyone involved in this tragedy.
YES, every gun is ALWAYS loaded.
A heroic girl like Miss Peters would almost certainly forgive this young fool. Will he ever be able to forgive himself?
I'd say he's already a narcissist or sociopath, and perhaps did this on purpose and made it look like an accident.
Our prayers are with this family for the horrible tragedy that occurred.
And while I certainly approve of the repeating of the rules of firearms, I will point out something else that could have prevented this from happening: not letting a minor hang out with an adult.
Are these IDIOTS ever ever ever going to learn?
I guess not, that’s why the word idiot was invented in the first place I suppose.
Poor girl saves two lives only to have hers taken by some meathead.
RIP Aubrey
RIP Aubrey Peters, you did good in your short life.
I'm guessing he already has, and any remorse he feels is for himself - facing the consequences of what he did. He should have been a cop, then there wouldn't be any consequences.
What a complete dumbass. This is the kind of stuff that gives the gun grabbers reasons to take guns away.
How do you teach dumbasses like this the rules of handling a firearm.
As it turned out no one was hurt. But I never regretted not looking cool by being the only one to leave over the reckless display of the rifle.
the excerpt says he removed the magazine, turned the safety off, pointed the gun at her, and pulled the trigger.
My weapon will not fire a round in the chamber if the magazine has been removed. Even so, I wouldn’t point it at someone. Just thinking of what this kid did makes me cringe.
