NASA's Curiosity rover has uncovered signs of an ancient freshwater lake on Mars that may have teemed with tiny organisms for tens of millions of years, far longer than scientists had imagined, new research suggests.

The watering hole near the Martian equator existed about 3.5 billion years ago. Scientists say it was neither salty nor acidic, and contained nutrients _ a perfect spot to support microbes....

From article, " Curiosity, though, lacks the tools to search for any fossilized microbes."

Oh well, maybe next time.

Is there a single lake on Earth that scientists know has been around for tens of millions of years? And know that it was not too salty for all of those tens of millions of years?

If so, then maybe they can speculate about potential lakes on Mars.

I’d be more inclined to look for fishing lures. At least you might be able to sell them on ebay as antiques.

Of course there was life there -I mean c’mon! All you need for “life” to spontaneously generate is a puddle of water, the right temperature, and some nutrients - right?

Leigh Brackett wrote about the Martian oceans in 1949: "Greed pulls the archaeologist Matt Carse into the forgotten tomb of the Martian god Rhiannon and plunges the unlikely hero into the Red Planet's fantastic past, when vast oceans covered the land and the legendary Sea-Kings ruled from terraced palaces of decadence and delight." http://books.google.com/books/about/The_Sword_of_Rhiannon.html?id=1q4bOAAACAAJ
