Imagine how differently things might have turned out if he was diagnosed as a "victim" in childhood and given medicine that inhibited his creativity. The world would have been denied some great music.
Nor did I imply that it was. Eccentric behavior was not treated as a disease in the past, however. It was somewhat expected of genius or rare artistic talent.
Autism has a downside even unto complete inability to function in the world, normal physical or emotional stimulus are just too much and they retreat into their own inner world. There is a spectrum, from genuine disability on up to so-called Asperger’s. Social interaction and reading emotions are an issue across the spectrum.
Most are highly intelligent. Most have an obsession.

What a tremendous number of people fail to understand is that "Normal" is a statistical construct. Very few members of any population fall on that line.
We used to accept the socially acceptable deviations from what we considered "normal" and recognize some of those were, in fact, talents or remarkable abilities.
No serious scientist or researcher looking for a cure to this or the answer to that does much but live and breathe the problem they are trying to solve--even when they are doing something else. We used to call that level of drive a "passion" for their work, and without that phenomenon, much of what we consider to be mere modern convenience would not have been developed when it was.
It is only recently, in the great quest for homogeneity and socialist sameness, that we have gone from calling that virtue to demeaning it as an obsession.
I knew nothing about her until I saw a Youtube video a few months ago. The Aspie was obvious.

I've had to explain to them the difference between Asperger's and my particular condition.
Asperger's is a condition that shrinks can diagnose.
My condition can be diagnosed by any layman.

Yes, I always thought that too. Plus she had a very hard time handling fame iirc. I have a family member who I think has Aspbergers, although an official diagnosis has never been pursued.
FWIW, I’d think that a lot of people with Asberger’s, high-functioning autism, ADHD etc would be on sites such as this. We can focus on the discussion, think about it, express our input, and not have to worry about all of the social dialog - what’s going on in the other persons’ minds, social cues, and keeping up with the fluidity of an active social environment and all that.
Not to hijack the thread, but didn’t Rush Limbaugh have a show where he said Asberger’s is a made-up pop psychology illness?

Bingo, I just saw your posts and mine was the same reaction. Of course I dx’ed her the first time she appeared on the stage.
And asperger’s isn’t actually helped by any medication. But real, it is. My son has genius IQ and notices many things other people do not. He is extremely competent in difficult things but not so much in simple ones that the rest of us don’t even realize are “talents,” like social skills and sense of direction, etc. and the inflexibility makes life so much harder - for them and us, right?? Still, I wouldn’t want to live in a world without all of these delightful quirky people!
