Not to hijack the thread, but didn’t Rush Limbaugh have a show where he said Asberger’s is a made-up pop psychology illness?
Did he? I don’t remember that. A lot of people from his generation grew up with people who had asperger’s but they just called them nerds or one bubble off plumb, and accepted that there were “people like that,” socially off but bright and techy. I think that might be what he means, that it is a made up dx. Meaning that people used to have it but weren’t given a dx.
Since there is basically an epidemic of autism spectrum disorders now, I hope he’s changed his mind and realizes that giving the label HELPS. It helps the child get the space he needs from people, the respect that he is still a bright person (not mentally ill, not dumb), and it helps the parents know that it is not their (or the child’s) fault that he doesn’t do what they want. These kids are super inflexible, and not getting a dx that something is wrong with their brains and they need more understanding, may have meant in Rush’s childhood that the kids were abused by their parents, punished for things they couldn’t help.
