Ison is a V shaped debris field with objects that are miles wide each..at least 21 large ones..
They are moving at 2 million miles per day.
Ison is moving away from "Secchi A" at that speed which makes it appear smaller from that camera each hour..
THE ROCKS ARE DARK NOW.
They will become darker as they move further from the sun over Earth..
They will not become smaller.
Yes I was attempting to agree with you.
"Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe." - Galileo Galilei
Is that the same Nancy that used to 'channel' the 'Zetas' (aliens) on USENET sci.astro???
She was a card-carrying, certifiable looney-tune ... 20 years ago.
Yes, good old Zetatalk Nancy Lieder.
Always good for a laugh or three.
As I understand it, there is no more Comet Ison. There are I nly the pieces formerly known as Comet Ison. If this is not so my post is inoperative. If there are only pieces left, all former predictions of the trajectory are inoperative.
I guess some things never get old.
Not true.
The pieces will continue to follow the orbital path.
Nothing has changed except that there are now pieces.
The bits of Shoemaker-Levy 9 didn’t magically change path, they continued to “wagon train” along the same path.
Yup.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
That we’re still here after the hysteria over Comet Elenin didn’t faze any of the true believers.

Shoemaker-levy 9.
Note that the chunks didn’t follow “magic” orbits but continued on to impact Jupiter.
I guess I missed that one ... I spent a few years away from that sort of thing. I recently watched a few episodes of “Ancient Aliens”. Wow. Erich von Daanniken is still around, and still spewing the Gods From Outer Space stuff. I’m surprised he’s still alive ... he’s practically an ancient alien himself!
If a comet disintegrates in space, free of external gravitational forces, then the pieces should stay on relatively the same path. If it is torn apart during a slingshot around the sun they will not. I don’t know what actually happened in this case but we will find out soon enough.
IF we do see any kind of meteor shower from Ison, it will be the week of January 14 or so give or take two days.
AND the shower will be from Isons descending inbound orbit, NOT the ascending outbound orbit.
“If it is torn apart during a slingshot around the sun they will not.”
It will do what Shoemaker-levy 9 did, follow its orbit.
Yes there will be some spreading of debris.
But not enough to send anything our way.
It will be more than half an AU away from us.
The bits have not done a Comet Biela.
Biela split along its axis, throwing a piece off that drifted into a different but related orbit.
Ison did not do that.
Ison broke up in fashion similar to SL-9.
The pieces will continue on the same path as before, “climbing” away from the ecliptic.
Nothing magic about this at all.
And point of fact: Shoemaker-levy 9 broke up on a “slingshot” approach of Jupiter, in exactly the same way Ison broke up on approach to Sol.
At perijove in 1992 it crumbled, and the pieces followed the same orbit until impact in ‘94.
Ison broke up at perihelion, the pieces will follow the orbit of the parent body.
Ok then. Thanks for the info.
Welcome.
Biela’s Comet is an interesting read despite sparse info.
Before cameras, they had to hand sketch what they saw through the telescope.
Biela’s comet had a 6.6 year orbit, it split sometime before 1845, but it took a couple orbits for the bits to obviously become separate.
(Which was finally noticed in 1845.)
The comet is listed as both “Dead” and “lost”, it spawned a minor meteor shower (in 1872) that has since petered out completely.
(3D/Biela)
Thank goodness I took a nap. I wouldn’t want to miss anything.
Well here's the deal - "mostly volatiles and dust" are things that form a cometary tail. Comet tails blow away from the sun, because the solar wind hits them, and because they are so light.
ISON's "debris" did not blow away from the sun after perihelion. That means this "debris" is too heavy to be affected by the solar wind. Is that what you meant by "mostly"? As in, all stuff you mentioned doesn't apply, because what you left out is what "mostly" applies?
And as for the spreading cone of "debris" travelling over a million miles a day, spanning over a million miles wide and still growing, I guess you're right - there's no possible way that the same sun that created that "debris" would be nearly strong enough to smack it so hard that it could spread 401 million miles wide by the time it gets here.
Not possible. The sun is just too weak to do that.
401 should be 41
The posited exit trajectory was for a single body. As the break-up was mainly caused by tidal stress on weakly bonded chunks, the trajectories will be somewhat different. Results in a ellipsoidal spray pattern.
