Windows 8.1 overtakes Mac OS X 10.9 among desktop OS users

Windows 8.1 is now the fifth most popular desktop OS, at least as recorded by Web tracker Net Applications.

For November, Microsoft's latest version of Windows snagged 2.64 percent of all desktop OS traffic recorded by Net Applications. That number was a healthy gain from the 1.72 percent seen in October and the 0.87 percent in September.

The rise also pushed Windows 8.1 just ahead of Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks with a 2.42 percent share and just behind Windows Vista with a 3.57 percent share.

Windows 8.1 popped up in June as a preview edition before officially launching in October. The upgrade is free to Windows 8 users and offers several improvements over its predecessor.

Windows 8 continued to shed its share of traffic in November as more users upgraded to its successor. But combined, Windows 8 and 8.1 took home a 9.3 percent share, easily outscoring Vista but still playing a distant third to Windows 7 with 46.6 percent and Windows XP with 31.2 percent.

XP has gradually lost ground since giving up its dominance to Windows 7 in August 2012. But the 12-year-old XP continues to hang on among users and businesses. Time is running out, though. Microsoft is set to cut off support for XP in early April.

I just got a new desktop and a new laptop, both with 8.1.

Aren't you going to tell is how much you hate it? I intend to upgrade to 8.x, but I also intend to modify it.

It’s not bad when you get used to it.

Perhaps something like that, but I don’t visit those circles. I and most everyone I know use all three OSes regularly.

I guess you haven’t used windows multi-monitor for a long time. No muss or fuss two full HD monitors side by side.

My early 2011 get’s tied up in it’s underwear using netflix pretty regularly, freezing and showing a blank screen. It happens when closing the clamshell then re-opening it.

Also only one external monitor is allowed unless you buy a $300/400 gizmo or an apple monitor.

Love my desktop PC (Win 7) with 27” monitor. Also love my iPad.

If you’ve got $500 to spare (IMO the base model is sufficient if you have wifi at home), I don’t think you can beat the iPad Air and it’s Retina display. I hear Samsung is working on a super-res screen, but for now I think iPad wins big time.

I like OSX also, but find Apple computers too pricey for my pocketbook.

"... Everything actually useful is done on almost anything else *but* Microsoft's latest versions of their desktop user OS, server OS, productivity suite, MSSQL database environment, Visual Studio version, SDKs, web-based .NET framework, or MSFT's hardware offerings such as their smartphone or dedicated Surface (and especially Surface RT) tablets because anything and everything related to Microsoft and Windows is stumbling along just fine on 7+ year old versions with zero reason to upgrade aside from MSFT's artificial terminations of support."

There. Fixed it for you.

Hmm, I have a 2012 MBP 17" (the last and best of the MBP in Matte not glossy) which I use for development work, and I find Mavericks finally fixed the main issues I had with dual monitors, which I use every day.

With that said, in general the ONLY THING Windows does better than Mac's is multiple monitor support, but its difficult to make a blanket claim for that since you video card and drivers still play a large part in how well it works.

But Mavericks finally provides a usable multi-monitor solution, and don't dismiss AirPlay on an AppleTV, it is WAY cool !

How is this a surprise? Windows is only like 85-90% of the desktops out there. Even if a small percentage upgrade it will still be more than Apple.

I am growing to like it. A lot.

Very secure. And because of the hardware offered at this point in, time very fast. Blazingly so.

A reason I hate Apple products is because of the total control Apple insists on having over the end user (owner).

I recently tried to send a jpg file from my Samsung Galaxy @4 to an Apple Tablet via Bluetooth. Keep in mind that jpg files are system neutral, meaning thy can be viewed on any OS.

The Apple tablet refused to accept the download and I later went and read they did this purposefully.

I cannot stand Apple and this is merely another reason why. There is absolutely no reason on earth why 2 devices should not be able to share jpg’s.

I quit using desk tops because I don’t need that large a screen or that much capacity anymore. At one time I did but not so much now

I do play games on my Mac, but the number one most-used Windoze program is Solitaire!

And we all know the real reason Microsoft put Solitaire (and later FreeCell) on their Operating Systems: To give Windows users something to do while their programs "hour-glassed" in the background.

Have you tried right clicking the 8.1 Start Button? It seems to bring up most of the Start Menu for me when I do that.

While that may have been true at one time, MAC has come a LONG WAY, and its because MAC OSX is basically Linux with a nice GUI on top of it.

I love ignorance on parade. Mac OSX is NOT Linux... it is one of the four trademarked and POSIX certified UNIX operating systems. No Linux is certified. They cannot be. Far more robust than the clean room rip off of Unix called Linux. There is a REASON for the cost of a Mac and it is not insanity. You need to do more research before opening your mouth.

If you don't mind the constant updates, hangs, crashes, and occasional foobar of your Fonts. Sure...

My current fave is still CentOS 6. I don't need a pretty "point and click" interface.

What century are you residing in? I have not seen a Font fubar since OSX made its debut.

Oh, probably not, but if it actually did anything I think Apple would be ticked off for stealing their "look and feel". And yeah, I thought my friend was going to have a minor heart attack when he saw it...,p> You may have the "look" but you certainly do not have the "feel."

If Apple is such a technology leader and so on the cutting edge, then why aren’t *they* trying to converge the tablet & the desktop interface?

No, tablets are for content _consumption_, whereas desktops are also useful for content _creation_.

Microsoft is killing itself.

We’re still running eMacs here. We just got rid of our last G4 Macbook student lab this past Fall. Of course, we also have Intel and PPC XServs, Mini’s from every generation, and Intel iMacs.

This post is coming from a 10.7.5/ 2,1 Macbook. I have a new Macbook Pro on order to replace my older Macbook Pro sitting on the workbench behind me right now.

We’re a school District. We run it until it drops.

I was even soldering new caps onto blown down convertors to keep some of the eMacs running. Was cheaper than replacing them.
