A PNNL staff member removed a burned-out compact piggy tail light bulb in his home and replaced it with a new one. When he turned on the switch, only a portion of the new bulb lit up. Assuming it was defective, he turned off the switch to remove it. Grasping the bulb, he felt a pain as if he had been cut by glass, and found a small, burn. Removing the bulb, he noticed the plastic base (see pix) was blackened at the point where it connected to the mercury tube.

Mmmm, yep

Obamabulbs are full of Uptonite.
I’ve had a couple that have burned a hole all the way through the plastic base.
Ban toxic twisties.
CFL = Compact Fatal Lightbulbs
Probably should overnight them to the Product Safety Commission or EPA for immediate safety recalls worldwide.
“The people” have given up trying to follow this gargantuan government, so it does most of what it wants.
Most peculiar, Momma.
Completely freakin lethal
I have a couple which are around 17-18 years old and are still working fine. They are not the kind with the twisted look and they are slow to get bright. Still they have really lasted.
The good part is they only cost ten times more then the old bulbs
The best thing about CF bulbs? “They last 15 times as long a incandescents!!!”
The worst thing about CF bulbs? Somehow, I find myself replacing them about every 6 months.
Most peculiar, Momma.
I can tell you exactly what you are doing wrong that is causing the CFL’s to fail. You are turning them on, stop turning them on! If you were an environmentally conscious person you would never turn them on.
I'm afraid they might break in my hands. Sometimes they get stuck in the socket. Can't remember how I got the one freed. Knew not to use WD-40. I'm sure on my own with stuff.
I bought a big box of 100 watts. Maybe the older more expensive ones were better. These aren't as bright.
My new overhead kitchen fixture blew. It's barely 2 years or less old. It's much shorter and uses long fluorescent bulbs which are different and shorter. Well it has blown and I'm waiting for help with it. Both bulbs. Looks blackened under there. Cheap HD crap. Too late to get my money back but maybe if it is blackened they will do something for me without a receipt.
They lit up right away though and was bright enough.
LED lamps are rated for 25,000 hours.
I wonder if LEDs are the future. They are getting to where they are really bright and like you said, they last a very long time. They also use very little power.
A few days ago, I bought a Black & Decker spotlight which says it is 1150 lumens. I think every flashlight I have bought for several years has an LED bulb. I was surprised the B&D light has a halogen bulb. I guess that is why it was pretty cheap.
Lawmakers are among the dumbest shits on the planet.
I put one in the light on the end of my garage, that comes on by automatically at night. I was replacing regular bulbs about once a month or every time it rained.
This one has been there two years and still working.
***I find myself replacing them about every 6 months.***
I’ve had several CFL bulbs burn out before their time. One lasted 24 hours, another 30 days, another 90 days. Others burn out after about a year.
They do not last near as long as claimed.
Same here. Even the cheapo incandescents I have bought last longer.
This post is ironic, in that I just this morning came across an email I sent to our local radio station in 2009 on CFLs. The only thing that’s changed is LED bulbs are finally going mainstream (failure rate of 1% that of CFLs).
I was going to post the body of that email, but chose not to.
Be sure to read the “Maine study” if whoever reading this has purchased a CFL in the past year...

(I checked: The link above is still good. Oh, and the EPA is still comparing the minute amount of mercury in CFLs to that of thermometers, as if ‘lower-quantity-exposure’ is any less dangerous for your children, pets, or yourself.)
