The nation's largest producer of turkeys is warning of a shortage of birds, just in time for Thanksgiving.
Butterball announced that it will be shipping out half as many large, fresh never-frozen turkeys to retailers this year. The company says many of its birds had trouble gaining weight during the production process. And though the cause of the problem remains a mystery, food distributors say their orders for turkeys 16 pounds and bigger have been slashed in half. Sixteen pounds is the national average for Thanksgiving holiday turkeys making this shortage a particularly concerning problem.

Too many of them have gone to DC to work for the ObaMao administration.
Turkey sales must be slow this year as everyone scrimps and saves to pay for next year’s ObamaCare debacle.
There’s nothing like advertising a “shortage” of a slow-seller to clear the shelves.
We all knew that was coming.. You were the fastest!
Double bacon cheese burger?
The turkeys are all in Washington DC on the tables and at the tables.
we’ve had about thirty of them at a time wondering across our front yard.
I have a gun.
This is not a problem.
ya....short turkeys....short legs.....
Bummer!
Most people buy frozen. I don't think this is a big deal.
I guess the shortage means an increase in price. Why coitenly...whoop whoop
I’ve been in the meat business for 30 years and I suspect this may just be a ploy to get people to buy early.
Beat me to it.
I seem to recall “shortages” of turkeys the last couple of years.
If there is a shortage of over 16-pound turkeys...buy 2 or more of lesser weight. Problem solved.
There is an established turkey family that crosses my Mom’s yard every day. There is also a shotgun behind her bedroom door.
Unfortunately the city limits went gerrymander & Mom’s house is now no longer in the country. I think the turkeys know this, just like the deer she sees every day from the kitchen window.
FWIW turkey hunters tell me that only the white meat is edible.
If you like your turkey, you can keep your turkey.
REALLY? How many Muslims are there who are buying their ‘halal’ turkeys? I think this is a ploy to get people to buy their turkeys! I wouldn’t take one FREE!! They decided to appease Muslims, let that be their only customers! Makes me sick!
I wonder what could be the cause of the birds not being able to gain weight?
Wouldn’t be a shortage if turkeys weren’t trying to take over every kind of meat. Turkey bacon, turkey ham, turkey sausage, turkey hamburger, turkey meatloaf, turkey pastrami, turkey corn beef..............
FWIW turkey hunters tell me that only the white meat is edible.
Fact is, there are millions and millions of turkeys out there for the American consumer and nobody is going to be denied a turkey if they want one. Maybe a few yuppies (like myself) will have a little trouble sourcing a $80 fresh turkey from the Whole Foods but if it comes down to it, we are going to have to suck it up and buy a frozen one with the rest of the unwashed masses - even though my wife will complain loudly if I have to keep a frozen turkey defrosting in the refrigerator for a few days. We will get through this. I just know that we will.
