Pink Eye Home Remedy (for my fellow ACA victims)

Posted on 11/17/2013 12:51:10 PM PST by ToastedHead

I used this again this week (with great results) so I want to share, since we're all paying the first $6000 dollars out of pocket now for healthcare.

My little girl came home from school Wed and one of her eyeballs was red. Throughout the evening, it got worse. She started to get the eyeball snots in the inside corner, and along the lower lashline.

I sent Hubby to the store for activated charcoal. This is the exact product he bought at CVS, around 10 bucks. It can be found in the aisle by the Tums and Maalox, because it's marketed as anti-gas.

I boiled a cup of water in the microwave, and then opened three capsules (grab on either side and twist) and dumped them in. Then I poured it through a coffee filter. After it cooled down a bit, I dipped plain old tissues in. I gently wiped both eyes (separate tissues) with enough of the clear black water to get them really wet.

In the morning, her eye was not worse, but still a little pink. I kept her home as a courtesy to the other parents, and I treated her two more times throughout the day.

By Friday morning, she was good to go. No pediatrician required.

I believe this was a viral pink eye, and not bacterial. If it continues to get worse after a day, an actual antibitoic eye drop is probably needed.

Nice tip. I neighbor has pink eye (a teacher), the school sent her to their doc and said she would need all sorts of stuff and $$$ to end it.

Her first response was a gin and tonic, I’ll let her know about this as well.

Pink eye is especially annoying, because its so easy for every family member to get.

I’ve put it in my own eye to test it before, and it made my eyes tear, but it didn’t burn.

You might also try Boric Acid. I think it’s cheaper as well.

1/4 cup Saline + 1 teaspoon of honey
bring to a low boil
Cool to room temperature
filter through coffee filter

Use eye dropper and apply to both eyes 2 drops every 2 hrs.

BTW, honey can be applied as an antiseptic to open wounds. It’s been used as a treatment for burns, cuts and abrasions since the Greeks.

Have you ever tried the Boric Acid? I remember compounding Boric Acid suppositories (was used for yeast infections) years ago, and the very fine powder in the air burned my nose. The reason I like the charcoal is that its readily available to buy anytime.

Wondering if some Aloe Vera liquid would be of help? Seems like the frequent flushing out with liquid helps the body fight it better on its own.

So you make a tea of the charcoal? That sounds easy. Thanks for the tip.

I used to get pink eye in school grades 1 thru 6 or so a lot. My mother used silver nitrate solution and it was very quick & effective cure.

You can also go to any hay and feed store and get a tube of antibiotic eye ointment. There is no prescription required.

I’ve noticed pet stores have a ton of antibiotics for sale. You can even get the tobramycin drops that are prescribed for pink eye for less than 20 bucks.

Activated charcoal is also good for food poisoning.

It might work. They use the same antibiotics in Polysporin eyedrops, just not sure of concentrations for comparison.

I haven't really noticed a lot of antibiotics in regular pet stores because dogs and cats require prescriptions too. However, you can pretty much buy any antibiotics you want for livestock without a prescription.

Those capsules I like to use are pure activated charcoal. I’ve seen other ones mixed with spooky homeopathic ingredients but I’d be afraid to put them in the eye.

For suspected food poisoning, do you know how long after the fact would you be able to use the charcoal?
