Americans prefer to work for male bosses instead of female bosses, according to Gallup, whose survey also showed that at least 40% of women prefer a male boss.
In the survey, which Gallup has conducted since 1953, adults 18 and older were asked, Suppose you were taking a new job and had your choice of a boss. Would you prefer to work for a man or a woman?
The results showed that 35% prefer a male boss while only 23% prefer a female boss. Another 41% were indifferent. But both men and women prefer to work for a man.

It depends on the boss’ personality.
Greatly.
Cue the study being spun as proof of patriarchal brainwashing and billions more tax dollars spent on more studies and committees and regulations to correct this oppressive, sexist problem. Would love to see the percetnage of women who preferred a female boss.
I'll wager the real gaps are even larger if men responding to the survey weren't afraid of accusations of sexism and women responding weren't afraid of accusations of gender disloyalty.
when I had a woman boss, all my female coworkers hated her and rejoiced when she left. Before that, we had a female boss at my ad agency and she was great, to guys. The young women hated her. She was a rainmaker, loved golf and threw fantastic parties for clients and her husband was cool.
just sayin..
Agree. I have worked form many male and female “bosses” over the years, the personality of the boss made the difference not the gender.
I learned all about "studies."
If the folks doing the study would publish just how many people were studied, what questions they asked and what the age group, gender, occupation, education, etc., those folks were we MIGHT find the results predictable.
Remember, the folks who conduct these studies have a hypothesis (Read that as "agenda.") and WANT their study results to match their hypothesis.
That's the way these things come down. Been there to study how skewed "studies" results are. We used to pick them apart!
You are right, OF COURSE! That seems like a no-brainer "duh" statement.
It's all about agendas, innit?
ATT dittos! All my bosses lately have been female! Been that way for several years! I M a technician. They r knott! So what am I saying? U do’t have to be male to have no brains!
And qualifications/experience - too many women have been promoted or give a high-level job ONLY because of her gender & lately - Race. My most recent boss was a young female, highly qualified, and very competent. She is the age of my daughter (30-something) and very ambitious. I got weary of trying to keep up with the demands, so retired. I am not impressed with many of the leaders in the hospital/health care industry... they should have fought Obamacare before it passed, but instead, jumped into bed with Soetoro. Men & Women alike...bastards and bastardettes.
Lol.
Have you noticed that Women's Lib hasn't sent women in droves to be divers, miners, oil rig fire fighters, merchant marines (very few), gardeners, ditch diggers and other jobs that are dirty, dangerous and/or away from home? Flight attendants don't count! :o)
You are right, of course, about the brains. Nature isn't always fair.
Classic example: Notre Dame halfback marries the CUTE-as-a-button, tiny cheerleader.
They have two children, girl and boy.
The girl takes after dad and the boy takes after mom. Lol.
My last female boss sexually harassed me and got away with it. If the roles were reversed I would have been fired.
I’d want to work for a boss who knows what he’s doing. Some companies put in people just because they’ve gone to some sort of management training. If I have a problem I want to be able get an answer from a boss who’s been there, done that.
I’ve had 1 female boss who was an incompetent liberal arsehole. Most miserable stretch of my career.
Personal observations, as a female, who has had multiple managers of all genders:
* 1 sexist guy, 4 decent guys, one clueless guy who was boss only by seniority
* 1 woman clueless for promoted above ability, one alpha female who was endlessly critical of me as mother with young kids (example: demanding overtime when I was working part time, repeatedly)
* 1 transgendered who was a prick both before and after surgery, it still works there but has no more subordinates.
In general, most male managers are decent. I would be wary of working for a woman, though the kids are older now. I will never work for a LBGTA again.
In male dominated professions, some companies look for female managers to even out the gender ratio in those divisions. Lots of female managers, for example, over programmers so the group isn’t all guys.
Do you know why the computer industry is so male dominated? It's not brains. It's muscle.
The guys have the necessary musculature in their arms, lower especially, to clack away at a machine far longer than women. I was in the muscle business for years and years and that research WAS done long ago.
But, GOTTA have women there, no matter what...just becuzzzzzzzzz. THAT isn't sexual discrimination, though, for some odd reason.
Double standard, perhaps???? Oh, never mind! :o)
Yes. Over my career I’ve had both, and learned to trust neither. There were a couple that played me straight, but the rest were only climbers, and used their workers as stepping stones. At the point now where I know the “New Manager 101” speeches by heart, and not to bend over when the soap is dropped...
Duh.
The double standard ONLY applies to white, Anglo-Saxon-Euro males. YOU KNOW THAT!!
Except, of course, for miners, mudders, brick layers, construction workers, fire fighters who carry 250-lb folks down ladders, house painters, ditch diggers, combat troops, parachutists, gardeners, MOST chiropractors, on-the-beat cops at night in horrible parts of town, often alone, ALL motorcycle cops, highway patrol, etc., merchant marines...all the dirty, dangerous and away-from-home jobs.
I was harassed by my lesbian boss the first year on the job. Her boss was lesbian too. I didn't know what to do. My dad taught me how to deal with mashers...MALE ones, not female ones. I left the job...best move I ever made. Thank you, Lord for that decision!!
