After debating a bill in the Wisconsin legislature that would allow motorists to purchase a Choose Life license plate for their vehicles, a Wisconsin state legislator called a pro-life organization supporting the plates a “hate group.”
During the Assembly Transportation Committee’s Executive Session this morning, Rep. Chris Danou (D-Trempeleau) made what Wisconsin Family Action calls “outlandish allegations” against it in his attempt to discredit WFA. Danou allegedly called the organization a “hate group” and WFA is not happy about it.
The following a response WFA sent LifeNews from its president, Julaine Appling:
“Rep. Danou’s statements today while discussing the proposed Choose Life Wisconsin license plate in the Assembly Transportation Committee show once again that people who are pro-abortion will make absolutely outrageous statements in an effort to advance their cause.
“Apparently, Rep. Danou isn’t such a hot-shot researcher. Had he been better at his research or less disingenuous in his statement, he would know that Wisconsin Family Action is not a ‘state affiliate’ with Family Research Council (FRC) or any other national or state group.
Image“That said, Wisconsin Family Action is proud to partner, from time to time, with Family Research Council on issues that are of mutual interest and importance. Family Research Council is run by some of our nation’s finest, including Tony Perkins, a former U.S. Marine and a former Louisiana state legislator; and Lieutenant General Gerald “Jerry” Boykin (ret.), whose 36-year military career included commands of both Delta Force and the United States Army Special Forces Command, as well as many other excellent staff members. These are most definitely the kind of people we are honored to work with and whose values we share.
“It is hard to believe that Rep. Danou would think that the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and its founder and leader Morris Dees are somehow more reputable and credible than Family Research Council. The SPLC has repeatedly been exposed for using its infamous and highly questionable comprised ‘hate groups’ listing primarily for massive fund-raising based on exaggerated representations.

“Actually, SPLC’s list of groups it has arbitrarily decided are ‘hate groups’ was involved in an act of domestic terrorism against FRC last year. In August 2012, Floyd Corkins went to FRC’s downtown Washington, D.C. office with a loaded pistol and extra rounds of ammunition. Fortunately, FRC’s Leo Johnson took Corkins on in the lobby. Mr. Johnson was shot but is credited with saving countless lives. Under oath prior to his conviction, Mr. Corkins admitted that he intended to shoot as many FRC staff members as possible and that he had identified FRC through the SPLC’s web site.
“I’ll take Tony Perkins and Leo Johnson any day as friends in this work. Rep. Danou ought to be embarrassed by his outrageous attempts to use the SPLC with its questionable practices and shoddy research as a means of slandering FRC and our organization. His colleagues and Wisconsin citizens are too smart to buy his foolish allegations.”
