An Atlanta woman is grieving the death of her dog after police shot it while responding to an accidental 911 call.
Kelley Rodriguez said her niece made the call by mistake. When officers knocked on the door, her pit bull mix "Jane" ran outside her home on Grant Terrace in southeast Atlanta.
Police said the dog tried to jump on one officer and he shot it in the head. Rodriguez said her dog was not trying to attack the officer. They shot her and then they were pointing the gun at my 14-week-old puppy. And I ran down in the yard to pick her up to take her upstairs to protect her, Rodriguez said.
Police said they shot the dog because the owner did not call the dog off of the officer.
"She was running, but that's what she does. She runs to greet people. She wasn't malicious. She didn't bite him," Rodriguez said.
The police can’t distinguish a TV remote from a gun, or an old deaf man from someone who won’t obey an order, or a mad dog from a friendly dog.
And there’s no recourse when they choose the wrong one.
Too many dogs are being shot by police, but owners have some responsibility to keep their pets from the near occasion of doing harm. The story says the cops knocked and the dog ran toward them and jumped. The clear implication is both cops and dog were outside the home. That’s the owner’s responsibility. If the dog is allowed free rein then there are potential consequences and this is one of them. The owner has also carefully couched the story to make it appear to a quick peruser that it was a 14 week old puppy that was killed. No description is given of the size of the dog. The dog may in fact have been defending her puppy, in which case the owner is doubly responsible for leaving her in a location where she could interact with strangers.
I caught a small factual error in that statement. It should have read "Police said they shot the dog because they felt like it."
and do cops have any responsibility not to shoot dogs willy nilly?
Horse sh**! The cops were out of line, outside on her property is still her property and her dog has the right to be there. Besides, many dogs run to greet people without biting them. I have two that do that. Any cop shoots one of them better duck. Cop apologists are as bad as the left wing nut jobs who defend Bozo the clown, they can’t see past the word cop and anything the cop does is fine.
Oh, sure there is.
There's suspension with pay and an internal investigation to exonerate the officer.
That is a good point.
The dog had a right to be on the property.
The police did not, without a warrant or permission.
Do you have a database to indicate just how many dogs actually bite uLEO’s during the course of a typical year? Must be HUGE because they certainly are taking no chances. At least they are getting home safely.
It is what they do. Dog = shoot.
Cops are doing everything they can to give themselves a bad reputation.
Even the idiots in Hollywood know that you avoid harming the dog if at all possible.
Apparently, you missed the part about the police responding to a 911 call. That’s called permission.
So when your dog jumps up on the postman and gets a shot of pepper spray in the face you’ll unlimber your firearm and shoot??
My friend's pit lab mix is the sweetest thing in the world.
In Long Beach California a few years back a fellow did not drop his garden hose nozzle fast enough for the police and was shot dead.
In before the Jackboot Lickers defending this wacked out cop.
Drug test Cops for Steroids now.
How many people get attacked every year by dogs matching this description?
Too late.
Fracking cops. Bullies who are too stupid to do anything worthwhile. I have nothing but contempt for them.
Did I say that? Nope, but I did say if they “shoot” my dog I will shoot back. Shoot means with a firearm using metal bullets of some kind not a pepper spray or mace. Got it now or is it still too complicated for you to understand?
