When Trans Fats Were Healthy

With a new FDA proposal to outlaw trans fats, this may be the end of what was once considered “a great boon to Americans’ arteries.” But surprisingly, science has only been against trans fats for the past few decades. Through the late 1980s, animal fat substitutes like Crisco and margarine were all the rage, and for a brief moment were even considered a health product. Here’s the story of how America fell in love with, and then quickly slid away from, hydrogenated oils. In the 1980s, some scientists began to associate heart disease with saturated fats, and in response, groups such as the Center for Science in the Public Interest and the National Heart Savers Association (NHSA) began to hound manufacturers for “poisoning America ... by using saturated fats,” and as a result “nearly all targeted firms responded by replacing saturated fats with trans fats,” as David Schleifer wrote in 2012 for the journal Technology and Culture.

My docs told me back then to eat margarine with trans fats instead of saturated. Also told me eggs were killers; they backed off of them too. Seems to me most times the gov't jumps onto some "study" and tells the people what to consume it turns out bad. Same with carbs.

A doctor told me once, “Medicine suffers from fads just like everything else. Suddenly a type of procedure is popular; all the rage. Everybody is doing it. Then after hundreds or thousands of operations we determine that it doesn’t do anything for the patient.”

I remember when eggs were good. Then they were bad. Then they were good again. Well, I have news for you. Everything you do to excess is probably bad for you. You can even drink too much water.

If they do a study and find that tofu causes cancer would all of California kill themselves? (I’ll donate $100 bucks if somebody wants to do a study on tofu.)

The French don’t eat transfats or partially-hydrogenated stuff. They eat pure butter. They manufacture the transfats and partially hydrogenated stuff and sell it to us and we slurp it up.

Center for Science in the Public Interest

I once read a book called The Food and Drink Police, and they had a chapter on this group (CSPI). These people in that group are certifiable. And I read that book years ago, so I can only assume they have become more crazy, not less.

There is no such thing as “expertise,” just varying degree of ignorance.

I just searched them and found this site:
CPSI Scam
http://cspiscam.com/index.cfm

Looks like they are the mother of a food nannies.
From the site:
Hypocritical Trans-ition

In September 2004, CSPI executive director Michael Jacobson published an op-ed in The San Francisco Chronicle renewing his call to outlaw trans fats from the American diet. He wrote: .It.s time to dump partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, the quintessential symbol of modern food technology, into the garbage disposal of history..

While he insists that trans fats are responsible for as many as 30,000 deaths a year (a highly questionable figure), Jacobson fails to mention that he is largely responsible for their heavier concentration in the American diet. In fact, CSPI was originally one of trans fats. most vocal proponents.

According to trans fat opponent Dr. Mary Enig, a Ph.D. nutritionist who has edited both the Journal of the American College of Nutrition and Clinical Nutrition, the blame for trans fat falls largely on Jacobson and CSPI. She wrote in the fall of 2003:

It is impossible to measure the hazards and grief that [CSPI Director of Nutrition Bonnie] Leibman and Jacobson.the leaders of the major nutrition “activist” consumer organization.have inflicted on many millions of an unknowing public.

I’ve always heard it as EX (x) is the unknown quantity and spurt is a drip under pressure. The failed mathematician in me likes that one better.

Yeah, if you eat half a dozen a day, with bacon and sausage.

Fork Report this afternoon was talking about TransFat ban. He mentioned frosting in cans and microwave popcorn and some of the items that would definitely be going.

I LOVE canned frosting, ok! And I am sharpening my sword. It is a teaspooon’s worth of calories that you can sub for an entire Cheese Danish. Cream Cheese is the best. And I am not going down without a fight! What the heck do the nannies think they are doing? He was talking about how McD’s french fries used to be really delicious until they banned beef tallow!

Do NOT get me started.

Yeah, if you eat half a dozen a day, with bacon and sausage.

Sorry, dude. In the immortal words of that lard-ass, non-verbal, female friend of Trayvon Martin, "dat ole skool".

Eat as many eggs and as much bacon and sausage as you can stuff down your gullet. I do. Weigh 137 lbs at age 60 and cholesterol level is perfect. It's those "healthy whole-grains" that are making everyone fat and killing them in the process.

Thank you government, may we have another?
