Much has been made of the Washington Redskins, with a national campaign dedicated to getting the NFL franchise to change the nickname and the team itself supporting high schools that share the name.
Yet, as offensive as the Redskins name may be, there's a prep mascot in California that is just as offensive, if not even more so.
The sports teams at Coachella Valley High School (Thermal, Calif.) compete as the Arabs. If that seems culturally offensive to you, that's because it is. The school's mascot is a cartoonish caricature of the most offensive traits prescribed to people from the Middle East. In essence, it's a more offensive version of what the Cleveland Indians' Chief Wahoo is to Native Americans.
To make matters even more insensitive, the school has a female student dressed as a belly dancer perform for the Arab mascot at halftime.

Johnny Carson once made a joke comparing dentists to the Gestapo. The next night he reported that he was being sued...by the Gestapo.
Isn't that the same name as the team in the article?
No, it's exactly as it was when I went there as a kid:
"Compton College's mascot name is the Tartars, named after the Turkic Tatars, so the mascot name for Compton High School became the Tartar Babies. The mascot itself is "Baby Tartar," who wears a diaper and carries a big sword."
Something I didn't know, was that former Compton High almumni include Duke Snyder (Hall of Fame baseball player), William Hanna (animator and co-founder of Hanna-Barbera), and James Coburn (movie and television actor, Oscar winner).
Liberals everywhere are clutching thier pearls.
Some years ago, a UW fan in the stands at Husky stadium for a USC-UW game had a sign that read BURST THE TROJANS.
Yeah we have to put up with a lot of condom jokes.
Interestingly there was a latex factory in Troy. They produced all kinds of latex products including gloves and condoms.
I saw Notre Dame fans wearing shirts that said “Catholics vs. Condoms” at a USC/Notre Dame game years ago.

They are now the Dragons
About 35 miles from Coachella (shell in Spanish) is a town named Mecca...near the accidentally man made Salton Sea. The area is part and parcel of what was ‘the desert’ part of the great Mojave, although there are now over 300 artificially irrigated golf courses and approximately 20,000 acres of farming between Palm Springs and Coachella (off Interstate 10.) There is also a Moslem cemetery in Mecca and that is why, I believe, the local desert citizenry thought it entirely proper to have an Arab as their mascot.
I was just thinking of all the teams we played in high school. Baseball, football, etc.
Three sets of Tigers, Two of Bulldogs, Pirates, Hoboes, Blue Devils, Tornadoes, Rams, Indians, Fish heads-oops that was just what we called them, they were another Bulldogs team. Also Aggies, Black Panthers, Crusaders. The list could get pretty long.
How about Hodags, Red Robins, Red Raiders, Lumberjacks, Warhawks, Trollers, Coons, Crickets, Blackhawks and Truckers?
Coons?
My mistake. May the mascot enrage the kind of people who get enraged about such things.
Perhaps they should retire to their fainting couches.
What would a dragon be Pekin at?

I remember Forest Gump said “I’m not going to school with no coons”.
Probably the most biased “news” writing I have ever seen.

This doesn't offend me at all.
