Police arrested a 21-year-old New York woman who allegedly drove into a herd of cows in Orange County, seriously injuring three of them.
Authorities say Daisy Cowit, of Wawayanda, was using her cell phone when she plowed her Jeep Liberty into the cows on Mountain Road last Monday. Six of the cows were struck, and two farm workers were nearly hit, police said.
Three of the cows had to undergo emergency surgery for their injuries; they survived.
Cowit was charged with reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and reckless driving. She also faces charges of driving while using a cell phone and failure to exercise due care, both traffic infractions.
It wasn't immediately clear if Cowit had a lawyer.

Yeah. I’ve had to follow a lot of farm equipment on my commute (central KY - lots of farming). But every cow I’ve seen in the road was one that got out of the pasture. People transport them in trailers.
For me, hitting a cow is like hitting a deer.

Cows certainly do get out of the pasture. We have one pasture that is about 1/2 mile down the road from the main ranch and my husband would move cows occasionally from one place to the other down a small county road.
He hasn't moved cows down the road from one pasture to another in many years. When that used to happened it was usually a pretty big herd and there was a truck driving slowly behind with lights flashing and several cowboys on horse back herding them. That is the old way, now they trailer them.
I think hitting a cow is much worse than hitting a deer, they are so much bigger.

I actually ate cow road kill last wednesday and it was delicious. To be honest, the car only mortally wounded it. It was in front of my friends house on the road and he shot it and dragged it onto the property where he butchered it. He butchers all of his pigs, cows, sheep and chickens himself.
But the guy that hit this cow was never brought up on charges.

Who's representing the cows?
A van ran into my retaining wall, and I got a letter from a lawyer

HAL: Just what do you think you're doing, Dave?
HAL: Look Dave, I can see you're really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over.
HAL: I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal.
I've still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission. And I want to help you.
HAL: I'm afraid. I'm afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I'm a... fraid.
Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am a HAL 9000 computer. I became operational at the H.A.L. plant in Urbana, Illinois on the 12th of January 1992.
My instructor was Mr. Langley, and he taught me to sing a song. If you'd like to hear it I can sing it for you.
Dave: Yes, I'd like to hear it, HAL. Sing it for me.
