Nick Cardy, a revered and influential comic book artist known best for his DC Comics work in the '50s, '60s and '70s, passed away Sunday at age 93, according to multiple industry reports...
At DC Comics, Cardy worked on the first 43 issues of the original "Teen Titans" series as either a penciler or inker (or both), in a run lasting from 1966 to 1973. I actually have a piece of original art done by Cardy. A cover to a DC horror comic, which I bought way back in the late-1970’s for about ten bucks.
I didn’t care much for “Teen Titans.” But Cardy was a good artist. Some of his art in the early issues of “Bat Lash” are absolutely beautiful.
Concur - I have many of his issues including the TT and Bat Lash, some of the Aquaman are much more detailed than other artists of the day (with exception of Neal Adams). I envy you your original.
The art I “wish” I had was a certain cover Cardy did for the “Witching Hour” title around 1973, which depicted some witches on broomsticks flying out of a chimney. Deliriously eye-catching and surreal. Just brilliant. I always thought Cardy was seriously underrated.
Still remember “Aquaman joins the Navy!” from grade school.
RIP.
I’m surprised that the headline didn’t inlude him being a cover artist for Action Comics (Superman) as well.
Cardy might have had the consistently best covers of 1960s comics — Teen Titans & Aquaman, in particular.
