I agree with you. I have had people tell me, "I am not addicted to the drug, I am addicted to being able to walk without agony."

Still these people basically have to prove they are not addicted before they can get a refill.

The really sad cases are the people who are terminal. "I have six months and they are worried about my becoming an addict? Really?"

my adult dtr who has aspergers also has dystonia....a disorder that sends the nerves crazy and you can get spasms and contractions ..her is in her neck.....she takes an ungodly amt of clonazapam....plus baclophen....we tried to reduce it but she had horrible increased spasms after just a few days....

I hate that she takes this stuff, but its a double whammy for her to have aspergers AND dystonia....so people shouldn't complain about their troubles because lots of people put up with a lot of crap in their life..

Dilaudid works quite well for me. For about three seconds it feels like someone hit me in the chest and then there is just the incredible relief as the pain begins to melt away.

This is why there are a number of drugs that do more or less the same thing. Some work for some people and some work for others.

You did not want to give my brother in law morphine, it caused major paranoia. We got there in time to keep the VA from locking him up in a psychiatric ward with PTSD but it was a close thing.

What’s wrong with the painkillers of the late 1800s? You took your cash into a pharmacy and bought all the cocaine, pot, or natural opioid that your desires and budget allowed. No cops. No doctors.

This man made stuff is more dangerous. It’s main purpose is to make work for a lot of busybodies like the FDA and DEA, while inuring the American citizens to the trashing of their constitutional freedoms in order to allegedly control drugs.

All this BS springs from the Social(ist) Gospel of denying individual rights for the individuals’ own good. Good according to whom is the question! Substance prohibition or alleged control is no more moral than confiscating the fruits of labor for another’s benefit, whether called slavery, robbery or taxation.

Your right drugs could be bought over the counter. America was a mostly rural country with towns many miles away and no doctors for most. One could not pick up a phone or drive to the ER so pharmacy's sold drugs. Used not just for people but in some cases animals also. I believe Sherlock Holmes kept cocaine in the toe of his slipper. No synthetics but most knew what plants and flowers were medicinal. I cannot agree that man made stuff is necessarily better. A beautiful flower of mine, the Foxglove is the basis for digoxin, but it must be used strictly or it will kill you. One of the flowers to plant if you have rabbit or deer problems, they wont touch a lot of flowers, you just have to know which ones...

I do agree with your last paragraph. Medications today are a lot more powerful than herbs and plants of yesteryear and due to our longer life span, the need for drugs to deal with age illness's is important. I have used a flower from the mum family called feverfew that the leaves will stop migraine, I would roll 3-4 leaves in a slice of bread, taken at the very beginning of a bad headache and it does the trick. But using herbals can be a ...kill you quick....if you don't know what your taking.

The only time in my life when the FDA banned a drug that was used in the rest of the world was called (spelling will be wrong) it was thalidomide that caused babies to be born without arms and legs. It was used for pregnant women that had hyperemensis during their pregnancy...(uncontrolled vomiting)That I think was back in the late 50's or 60's. I think aspirin would have a hard time passing the FDA regulations because it is a powerful drug that is so common you hardly know the side effects..

There was another drug given to women that were threatening to abort (miscarry) It wasn't know until the 70-80s that it caused cancer in young females whos mother took it to try to keep a baby. My neice had to have her hysterectomy in her early 30's as did the daughter of my friend. It males cancer of the testicles started showing up in males in their 20's. One of the reason all men should check their testicles like females check their breasts for cancer. Should be done monthly...so you know what they should or should not feel like...

I do not have an addictve personality, but klonopin was the absolute worst drug to withdraw from. I have many back problems, and no muscle relaxers were working so Dr. put me on klonopin to try to relax me.

I never felt a high from it, rather I seemed to be in a constant fog. Withdrawal caused tremors, paranoia, fear of leaving my house, brain zaps, nausea, eye pain so bad I had to lay with ice packs on my eyes for weeks. These are just a few I remember!

I think the biggest problem is that Drs don't tell you the consequences of these types of meds. They also write prescriptions for them like candy! Last time my back acted up, I suffered in horrible pain for months rather than take any heavy pain meds or benzos.

"...Potassium chloride, which is used to trigger cardiac arrest and death in the 38 states of the U.S. that enforce the death penalty is also pretty deadly..."

Potassium chloride is the main ingredient in "No-Salt" and "Nu-Salt" products. (Silicone dioxide— ;) —is another).

...also on ortho with patients that have severe pain in the back or cancer of the spine and these patients NEED strong meds just to be able to function....

Boy howdy, you said a mouthful right there. You are so right.

On Christmas Day 1990 I suffered a ruptured disk and the pain was so intent that I could not walk or stand or sit. I crawled from my bed to the bathroom. Finally, the pain lessened enough to get to a doc who gave me one round of Lortab. To cut to the chase, I managed life for the most part without pain killers. Because we travel a lot in our work, we are never in a place to establish a relationship with any specific doctor. But when I asked for pain meds, I got labeled as an addict. BTW, when I'm overseas, I can easily get serious pain medication over the counter.

Then, on March 30 of this year, 22+ years after the original accident, my back was healed. Suddenly, completely all the pain left and I'm active again.

Since I have no pain, I don't want or need pain killers.

Yeah, I was addicted alright. Like the poster upthread a bit said, "I was addicted to life without pain."

You are generous - this is less than half-assed.

Water. Water is the most dangerous substance known to man. Drink a sufficient amount of water and you can die. Evil water. Deadly water.

Drugs are tools. Misuse the tool and you can smash a thumb or lop off a hand. If you are suffering and need a tool LEARN the toolbox. Its not that difficult it just requires focus and responsibility,

The synthetics allow for a more accurate dose so that the symptoms are relieved and the side-effects are minimized.

Morphine is potent and tricky to use. Hydrocodone is less potent than morphine and the differences between 5, 7.5, and 10 mgs of hydrocodone are big. You might want to consider that there are other reasons as to why some medications were developed.

Thalidomide was not banned in the US, at least not till after the horrific side effects were discovered. It just hadn’t been approved yet due to the FDA’s demands for additional tests.
One of the (few) times bureaucracy worked out despite itself.
