Terrible twilight of Doris Day
The Daily Mail Online ^ | 10-26-13 | Tom Leonard

Posted on 10/26/2013 12:29:49 PM PDT by afraidfortherepublic

Stand outside the huge gates to Doris Day’s fortress-like home in California’s beautiful Carmel Valley and you can sometimes hear the sound of the canine companions who share the Hollywood star’s life.

It’s been some years since Day, now 91 and so reclusive many may be surprised to learn she is still alive, used to steal through the streets of the nearby town of Carmel in the middle of the night on a regular basis.

Locals would watch in surprise as she rounded up stray dogs and emaciated cats, bundling them in her car to take home and look after them.

At one time she had close on 50 dogs rampaging through her house, some of them piling on to her kingsize bed to sleep at night. People would leave abandoned pets at the gates and Doris, one of the biggest stars in Hollywood history, never turned them away.

She once refused to tell a interviewer exactly how many animals lived with her — people would think her ‘wacko’, she said.

The pert, fresh-faced and fun-loving blonde won Oscars romancing Rock Hudson in Pillow Talk and for her belting rendition of the song Que Sera Sera alongside James Stewart in The Man Who Knew Too Much.

But after four tumultuous and — in some cases, violent — marriages, she long ago gave up the company of men.

She much prefers her beloved dogs, though friends say she has always lived in fear that one of them might inadvertently knock her over or even bite her, causing serious injury.

Candace Bergen was the girlfriend of Day’s son, Terry, so yes, younger.

I did not know she was still alive, she did not age well.

that pic was taken 4 years ago when she was 87 years old........and you say she didn't age well????????

Got news for for you bro, you should pray to God that you look that good when YOU'RE 87, that is if you live that long.

It would be interesting to see what you look like today at YOUR age and let us be the judge of whether or not You are aging well.............

the county health department would raid her house, find it knee-deep in feces and felines,

Oh really? Where did you get that information from or did you just pick it out of your butt based on your own limited knowledge of animal lovers?

I loved DD in te movies - especially with James Garner in The Thrill of it All and Move over Darling; also liked her in Calamity Jane with Howard Keel, and in the Glass Bottom Boat with Rod Taylor. She did good suspense films too like The Man who Knew Too Much.

She was in one suspense film where she was being threatened, and the culprit turned out to be her husband - but I cannot remember the name of it.

Maybe I just became uninteresting or inattentive--....I guess I must have been really 4th class.

If you're desperately trying to compare yourself to Doris Day then I would have say YES............

Well, for one thing I am a SHE so I can say whatever I feel like about another female, and the second thing, I think she may just need a more stylish haircut/that isn’t colored blond, not an “aging” issue per se, more like an “I don’t want to be old” issue. She looks fit otherwise.

I am aging quite well, thank you very much. I won’t be around at 87, Obama is going to have us all bumped off long before I reach that golden age.

I didn’t know Bing had any siblings that made it big in music besides himself. That must have been a pretty deep shadow of fame to grow up in. It was only back in the 1990s, when I went through a big band listening phase, that I learned how good and soulful a singer Doris was. She could do jazz and blues with both subtlety and flair when flair was called for. I think her only grandson refuses to talk about her. He is probably tired of all the ‘old people’ asking him about his Grandma.

Beepkeepers in Hipboots, I’m afraid. It will probably be like that with my own father, who refuses to move from the crumbling old family home. Bring a face mask while you’re at it.

I think Les was the inventor of certain kinds of guitars that became a part of the Rock and Roll sound.
