Bullying Football Team: Did the Coach Go Overboard in 91-0 Win?

A high school football coach in Texas was slapped with a formal bullying complaint after his team won 91-0 on Friday.

Aledo High School, the football team that put up a score you’d expect to see in a basketball game, has scored 77 points or more in their last four games. This is the first complaint that has been filed against head coach Tim Buchanan for his team’s blowout victories.

The dad of a player on the team that was blown out, Western Hills High School, claims Buchanan encouraged his players to bully their opponents by running up the score.

Buchanan is adamant that no bullying occurred in his team’s win. Not only did he pull his starters in the first quarter, his third string players were on the field when the clock ran out. After the first half was over, the officials began running a clock that didn’t stop unless a timeout or score occurred and in the fourth quarter, the officials used a continuous running clock, so the score could have reached triple digits.

Neither Buchanan or his team were happy over the victory. “We were just sitting there,” Buchanan said. “You’d have thought we got beat. I looked around and asked, ‘Is there anyone here that feels good?’” Buchanan says that while such victories aren’t anything he takes pleasure in, he can’t tell his kids to quit, either.

“I’m not gonna tell a kid that comes out here and practices six to seven hours a week trying to get ready for football games, ‘Hey, you can’t score a touchdown if you get in, you’re gonna have to take a knee,’ Buchanan said. “That may be the only touchdown that kid gets to score in his high school career.”

I haven’t seen any of Baylor’s opponents whining.

You're missing something. "Running up" the score means that it's an overt, intentional act to embarrass the other team. Just because the score was a lot to a little does not mean it was "run up."

"Running up" happens a lot in college football due to school rivalries, the coach's egos, and the way the BCS system works.

This instance is simply one team being a lot better than another. The winning coach actually took measures to slow down the scoring. But he wasn't about to tell some third-string running back to take a knee or a defensive lineman who never plays to NOT sack the other QB.

Texas splits 5A. The biggest schools are in one level; the smaller in the other.

Oklahoma State beat Savannah State 84-0 last season.

Which means that Savannah State earned about $5K for each point OSU scored. It was strictly a "money game" for Savannah St.

Injuries occur when you don’t go all out.

In my senior year in high school we won the Homecoming football game with a score of 104-6. The coach was sending in all his players but the crowd was hyped and toward the end the crowd was screaming to go for 100. The other team was, of course, thoroughly demoralized. For a cap someone slashed the team bus tires. It actually was not something for which we were proud once the Homecoming high wore off but it was what it was. The school was in the same division as ours, from a larger city. It should have been better.

A few months later the basketball team from this losing high school slaughtered our team, something like 60-18. It was sweet revenge for them. The second time we met in basketball competition, the game was very close and I can’t recall which team won.

Our coach told us that if we cannot stop them from running all over us then we deserve to get what we get. Step up and be men.

My old lax coach always said, “If you play not to get hurt, you will.”

I think I heard recently that Texas is considering adding that 6th level.

Massmike ... these classifications are based on school size. Aledo is in 4A and probably pushing the student population limits on that. They are certainly talented enough to play in 5A.

We had a high-school football game here recently where the superior team got out to a crushing halftime lead, so they cut the last 2 quarters to one minute apiece.

I would not have been happy about that if I had been a player. Even on the losing team. You bust your tail in practice all week, you sure want your game time.

I saw a repot about this which seemed to indicate the report was filed through a school board website that allows anonymous complaints about bullying to be filed.

Maybe they need to do promotion/relegation like in soccer.

Why would I tell the second and third string, who won’t get many opportunities to play, to do anything but go out there and do their best?

In football, as in life, you can't do things half baked.

Had it been Southlake, the final score would have been 191-0, and the Southlake parents would still be bitching about the referees.

Antipathy between Coppell and Southlake runs deep...lol.

But at the high school level, sports are about learning teamwork, sportsmanship, and fair play.

It is also about competition and dealing with adversity. Sometimes you're over matched, just like real life. That is fair play.

My wife teaches for the Judson ISD. Even though we don’t live in that district; we had the choice of sending our son to Judson High School. For the football program. This was before they split Judson off to another high school.

Thing was - they had over 100 boys in the varsity squad alone. My kid was never gonna see playing time.

So we sent him to the high school in our district (5A) and he was in varsity for 3 years and a starter for two.

Great times...

Other Western Hill scores this season (all losses) ...
61-7
62-10
63-0
9-7
35-7
49-30

Yeah ... they’re a horrible team. Ranked well behind the 1,000 mark in the state. They played a top 20 team ... what do they expect?

Not a good situation but not the coach’s problem. I think I read that the losing team was losing big all year and the winning team is winning big all year. There are lessons that are learned when you get whipped, but not when you’re consistently whipped. Winning big like this probably means that team has a “Program” like De LaSalle in California. You have to adjust and start your own program, or you’re going to get whipped for years.
