Nearly 600 pets have died and more than 3,600 have been sickened in an ongoing, mysterious outbreak of illnesses tied to jerky treats made in China, federal animal health officials said Tuesday.
Most of the cases have been in dogs of all breeds, ages and sizes, although 10 cats have been sickened, too. The pace of the reported illnesses appears to have slowed, but federal Food and Drug Administration officials are now seeking extra help from veterinarians and pet owners in solving the ongoing puzzle.
To date, testing for contaminants in jerky treats has not revealed a cause for the illnesses, Martine Hartogensis, a deputy director for the FDAs Center for Veterinary Medicine, said in the new report. Despite these warnings, we have continued to receive reports of illnesses in both cats and dogs.
The new numbers are up from some 500 deaths and 3,200 illnesses tallied in January, but the rate of reports has fallen sharply since then, mostly because two of the largest sellers of pet chicken jerky treats announced recalls tied to the presence of unapproved antibiotic residue detected in the products.
FDA officials dont think that antibiotic residue is the big problem that has stumped the agency since 2007, when pet owners started reporting their animals were suffering gastrointestinal and kidney problems after eating the popular jerky treats.

Never, never, EVER buy any foodstuff made in China. They are the worst food adulterers going. I don’t care if it is dog food, cat food Chinese noodles for human consumption. NEVER!
Undetectable food additive causing illness and death?
From China?
Hmmm...

Also, we use no dishes made in China.
Lead poisoning can occur when food or drink is consumed from incorrectly fired china and pottery.

know what is going into them, at least after I buy the chicken.”
You might have to rethink this now that our chicken is going to go from U.S. processors to China before it comes to the grocery store near you.
Can we trust anything from China?
I am positive I lost a dog to this. It was terrible. She was fine one and then 12 hours later, she was gone.
“Confirming my adage: Never put anything from China in your mouth.”

I quit using treats from China about 2 years ago. Fool me once . . .
The Chicken Jerky Treats I have been purchasing have been exclusively at Costco under the Kingdom Pets Label
Also, for those that don't know, baked Salmon skin is a very good treat. Just be sure to read up on why raw salmon is deadly to dogs and ensure it's cooked.
While I plan on trying to make my own treats eventually, I've been lucky enough to never have purchased any of the recalled treats.
I'm not going to delve into the 'made in china' vs. elsewhere other than to say you can't even trust the 'organic' label in some cases. At least Kingdom Pets is obtuse about their regular product testing (see link on their site above).
Cute poochie. Seriesly.
And that is exactly why our poochies only eat the special dry and wet food the Vet prescribed..WD and ID wet food, for dogs with sensitive tummies..that is what our boys eat and they love it..made in the USA
