Why Carry a Gun? 7 Objections Destroyed.
Gundigest ^ | 14, October 2013 | Massad Ayoob

"The question is constantly asked: Why do you want to carry a gun? Here are Massad Ayoob’s 7 proven answers vindicating concealed carry.

1. “Why do you carry a gun?”

Kathy Jackson said it best on her website (www.corneredcat.com): “I carry a gun because I can’t carry a policeman.”

2. “But aren’t you worried that if more people carry guns, more arguments will escalate into people being shot and killed?”

No. Responsible gun owners are too practical to worry about things that don’t happen. ......."

"3. “Why should a person who lives in a low crime area feel they had to carry a gun?”

Famed combat small arms instructor John Farnam said it best. He was teaching an officer survival class to rural police when one officer asked him, “Hey, how often do you think cops get killed around here, anyway?” Farnam’s reply was classic: “Same as anywhere. Just once.”

4. “Why can’t you face the fact that a study has proven that a gun in the home is 43 times more likely to kill a member of the household than a burglar?”

Probably because, being logical people, most of us who carry guns detest having to look at such fact-twisting exercises in sophistry.

5. “A review of strategy discussions on Internet gun boards reveals the fact that many people who are licensed to carry guns carry more than one. If this is not an indication of two-gun cowboy mentality, how else can it be explained?”

Firearms instructor and author David Kenik was once asked, “Why do you carry three guns?” He calmly replied, “Because four would be ostentatious.”

6. “You bloodthirsty gun people only carry weapons because you want a chance to hurt or kill someone!”

On the contrary, we carry guns so we will be less likely to have to kill or cripple someone. It’s called “Peace Through Superior Firepower.”

7. “You don’t have any right to carry guns anyway! The Second Amendment is about the National Guard, not personal protection!”

The Bill of Rights was framed shortly after the American Revolution. A “National Guard” in the time of the revolution would have been Tories loyal to King George and duty-bound to crush the American patriots. Do you really think this was what the framers intended to empower and enable?......"

"3. “Why should a person who lives in a low crime area feel they had to carry a gun?”

"Why should I have a smoke detector and fire extinguisher in my home? Why should I wear my seatbelt while driving my car? Why should I wear safety gear like helmet, gloves, jacket, boots, etc while riding my motorcycle?

The answer is that while you might not need any of the above, when you do need them, you need them RIGHT NOW, and you can't "undo the situation" that requires any of the above. If you don't have them, bad things happen!

Five rules of a gun fight:

1) gun beats no gun
A gun that is left home because it does not fit or is too big to carry is “no gun”. Also, a gun that jams is a club and counts as “no gun”

2) fast beats slow
Usually the one to shoot first forces the other person to either dive for cover in the case of a miss or react to the injury in the case of a hit. So practice the safe draw.

3) accuracy beats bullet size
A .22 that hits beats the heck out of a .44 mag that misses. Stick with the gun size that you can actually hit accurately in slow fire.

4) bullet size beats bullet speed
Big holes bleed out faster than little holes and in the 3” to 6” barrel range, there is not going to be that much difference in velocity. However, once the caliber is decided, high velocity is good. .357 mag beats 9mm but both have the same size bullets. Also remember the previous rules. If you can’t shoot a .357 accurately, then drop to a 9mm or .380 or what ever you can handle.

5) more holes beat one hole
If it is worth shooting once, then shooting twice will only help them bleed out faster.

Folks I know that carry, myself included, tend to stay away from area’s and situations that would force us to pull our weapon in the first place. It’s when we can no longer control our surroundings by being aware of them at all times the need is abundantly clear.

The National Guard was not formed until 1916. Does it even remotely seem possible that the Constitution was written for something that would not exist for another 130 years?

#3 and all of you examples are about odds and statistics. The critic cites the odds based on statistics that 'event x' is very unlikely to happen. But no one ever cites odds and statistics at a funeral.

"It is so sad that our dear friend, John Doe, hit the bad luck lottery but, oh well."

I carry a gun because I cannot throw a rock at 1200 feet per second.

I forget who originally said that, but it was funny and true.

Because it takes too long to drive home, get the gun out of one safe, the ammo out of another, load the gun, drive back and hope that your assailant have been politely waiting for you where you left him.

When they ask questions like “do you really think you might need a gun to defend yourself?”

I like to reverse it and ask them:

Do you have a smoke detector in your house?
Do you have car insurance, house insurance, etc?
Why?
Do you really think you’ll have a fire, a theft, etc.

From “Layers of Response” by John Farnam

Layer 1: Don’t Go There
A traditional (allegedly rabbinical) admonition preached by defensive shooting instructors is: “Don’t go to stupid places with stupid people and do stupid things.” Corollaries are:

Nothing good happens in bars after midnight.
Rowdy companions are dangerous company.
The “bad” part of town is called that for a reason.

“A superior gunman is best defined as one who uses his superior judgment in order to keep himself out of situations that would require the use of his superior skills.”

In 1986, I was in the National Guard. We celebrated the origin of it 350 years earlier with a run around the state.

I hadn’t thought about a fire extinguisher for the car.
Good idea!
