My favorite one (not mentioned in this article) is the Dunkin Donuts "Big and Toasted". Here is the picture featured on the menu compared to reality...
But it's really more like this...
In China and Hong Kong the Restaurants all have fine print at the bottom of the menu that says “Pictures for reference only”
But do they taste good.
I saw a documentary that showed how they do it, and they don’t even use food, they’re plastic models.
that aside, every single fast food place I’ve been too, the quality is so poor, i’m still trying to figure how they can stay in business. I’ve actually given up on all of them.
once in a while they entice you. I tried the wendys pretzel burger, it sucked.
Yes, generally speaking, they do.
Thanks
I remember seeing a print Magazine article about food photography for advertising some decades back.
they do some really strange stuff to the food to give the desired appearance.
tooth picks used as pins are used to level imperfect hanburger buns..and Elmers Glue was used in one photo to take the place of Sauce...
the goal is the IDEAL...what people THINK the food should look like
the “cheesey” window menu photography most often seen at Chinese Restaurants takes the Opposite approach,....and much of that stuff looks nearly inedible.
sadly trying to find any Photos of WIndow Menus.....returns millions of screenshots of WINDOWS computer desktop...or Id post a couple of those images for comparison sake.
A friend of mine was a food magazine photographer. He always had a spray bottle of oil to make the food look shiny and better.
I remember the first McDonald’s I ever saw. It was around 1960 in Ft. Walton Bch. The hamburgers were 15 cents. There was no indoor seating and very little outdoors.
I can recall being surprised that they were good, especially the fries.
From around 1985 until very recently I can’t recall eating at a fast food restaurant all all. Then maybe two years ago, I had to eat out and decided to try McDonalds.
I could not believe how bad it was. Just about inedible. Don’t tell me they haven’t changed.
ah yes the OIL.
the article I remember was either in PRINT Magazine of Communications Arts
my vocation is graphic arts although Ive made a few reasonable “fine arts” photographs.
I wish I could remember what the tin foil in the article mentioned above was used for...
If a burger flipper in CA gets $10/hr (or soon will get), how much does the guy who sits on the burgers before they’re given to the customer get? There’s no way that wrapped up mush happens naturally so someone has to have the sit and smash job.
When I worked at McDonald’s (1974 the paper hat and blue barber shirt era). We called a tray of Big Macs that looked especially good “Movie Macs”.

To put on your head and deflect the rays.
But instead it looked like this.

_______________
In 1972 when I wore the MickieD’s sailor suit and looked particularly cute we had Big Macs for breakfast lunch and supper.
those studio Lights can get rather warm yes...
it may have been used to “level” one layer of food in a sandwich,,to “near perfection”
That website is a pos that will attack some browsers and lock them up.
Keep off.
Never cared much for the Mac myself. The fries were the only station I could work all day and still want to eat them. Of course they were still cooked in lard then.
Tricks we played on folks we didn’t like... cook some apple pies in the filet-o-fish tank, “forget” to break the yolks on the egg mcmuffins so they’d squirt when bitten into.
As long as it's not squidward making 'em (the bottom picture)

i understand creating advertisement food is a big industry in asia. one of my preselect scenes on my camera is for food
