The Cadillac ELR extended range electric luxury coupe will go on sale in January for $75,995, including destination charges.
Derived from the 2009 Converj concept car, the ELR will have a driving range of more 300 miles between the dual fuel powertrain of an electric motor and a gas generator. The electric-only range is 35 miles, General Motors says, but once the battery loses power the 1.4-liter gas generator takes over to power the electric motor.
If this sounds like the Chevy Volt, the other plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or extended range electric (EREV) produced by GM, its because the ELR is being produced in the same Detroit factory and on the same platform as the Chevy Volt.

LOL!
Caddy is still living in the shadow of the Cimarron, it’s mentioned. :)
Ding ding ding.
We have a winner; phone lines are now closed.
I remember a similar venture between Chevy and Cadillac, producing an abomination known as the Cimarron..
I would look at buying a GM vehicle.....if they got rid of the UAW.
You and me both! 1989 Oldsmobile.
Exactly. Not ready for prime time.
New technology's fine with me if it's better and proven.
And there's 100+ years-worth of proven gas and diesel technology.
I agree.
What worries me is how reliable it would be. I'd want someone else to do the beta testing.

I’ve heard that it is theoretically possible to produce a capacitor with so much surface area (thanks to nanotech) that it could store hundreds of miles (or more) of energy for a vehicle that could carry four passengers comfortably, and could be recharged in a minute or less. That’s the cool thing about caps.
But it is not really practical as a mass produced product - yet.
When I bought my Scion FRS, the only reason I didn’t get a Volkswagen TDI was the incredible distance between my house and the nearest dealer. One of the rare disadvantages of not living in a megalopolis.
If we could get it in 20 years, that would be great. It would be a tremendous accomplishment.
That was the best-looking Cavalier that Chevrolet made.

Frankly, with the discovery going on regarding the functioning of the human body, cells and dna, I figure we are less than 50 years from discovering immortality. And no, I don’t think that would be a good thing until we find enough planets to put us all on. And immortal men would only be far more evil than we can ever hope to be in our current short lives.
Amen-we all know how well that brilliantly designed Volt sold, don’t we? I’m sure GM is just giddy, and wants to repeat the success...
I had the displeasure of driving as a passenger in a Volt recently. While I was told by the ‘lessee’ that Consumer Reports rates the Volt’s ‘customer experience’ as #1 (unverified), let me tell you:
The Chevy Volt has the LOUDEST road noise of any small sedan/compact I’ve ever ridden in (louder than the wife’s 20-y/o Honda Civic).
Besides a few more frills, fancy wheels, leather & other fancies, I guarantee you that the ELR will include about 800lbs of noise dampening and just MAYBE the road noise will go away.
The question is: Will the ELR sell on the promise of $30k of leather & noise dampening? Heh...
I wouldn't take it anyway. Too many people on the other side I want to be reunited with.
Wonder how hot a fire this will be when it goes up. Wouldnt park it near my house.
I wouldn’t take it anyway.
Same here. But you know that most “successful” atheists would.
That’s interesting.
Looked at Car & Driver tests and the Volt, Civic, Elantra, and Corolla were all right around 70 dBA on their sound test with the Focus at 72.
