Culpeper (United States) (AFP) - There was no mistaking the muscular roar of the big radial engine as the most famous trainer to come out of World War II soared above this rural Virginia town.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the North American T-6 Texan, the big tandem-seat warbird in which countless pilots from dozens of countries honed their flying skills.
This weekend, some 30 Texans will set off from Culpeper, 70 miles (115 kilometers) outside Washington, and fly up the Potomac River, over the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery, to mark a unique aeronautical milestone.

The T-6 Texan is one heck of a plane; even stood in for the Mitsubishi Zero in “Tora! Tora! Tora!”.
An iconic plane.
Conceived, designed and built - before computers. Good old brains did this.
This is the plane my dad learned to fly in as a cadet at NAS Corpus Christi in 1942, and one he later flew in as an instructor pilot down in Pensacola...where one of his students was James Stockdale.
Sounds like the ideal configuration for a flight up the Potomac to D.C.
This was the plain I had my first ride in as a Calif. CAP spotter in the back seat. This is were a young boy said” As G_d is my witness I will one day be a pilot”. And so years later with little money but joy in my heart I had my ATP Lic.
