Where's Craig Kimbrel? Not in the game (Oct. Baseball Live Thread)
ESPN ^ | October 8, 2013 | David Schoenfield

Posted on 10/08/2013 10:04:36 AM PDT by campaignPete R-CT

Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings.

Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer ....

Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel."

The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game.

The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using Kimbrel for two innings. "I think six outs isn't something we were even talking about in the dugout," he said after the game.

But what’s the difference between four outs and six outs? Six pitches? Ten pitches? And that doesn’t even factor in that the Dodgers had the 5-6-7 hitters due up in the eighth and the 8-9-1 hitters up in the ninth.

So instead you lost a game with a guy who had a 6.07 ERA last year for the Houston Astros.

... ".. I want the ball." We'll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn't say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.

This should be covered in Managing 101. ... Who cares if it's the seventh inning or the eighth inning or the ninth. I'd rather lose with Carpenter in the ninth inning or the 10th inning or whenever ...

Look, managing your bullpen in a structured manner in the regular season is one thing.

October is not the regular season.

Fredi Gonzalez didn't think the best reliever in the game can get six outs.

He ended up getting none.

“Who gets the MVP for Boston?”

Sulu, he deserves it.

Fielder is an embarrassment. He looked disinterested. What a fat slob. DET has 7 more years of him - enjoy. He did nothing to try to pick up the slack of an ailing Cabrera.

Exactly, Cabrera is hurt badly and if he was healthy, I think this series would have gone to DET, even with the slob Fielder adding nothing.

But, he is hurt and BOS pulled it out.

Bogaerts is starting, period. If Farrell doesn’t start him, he’s a fool.

I hope Morales made his last appearance as a Red Sock; he was beyond putrid.

Buchholtz is either still hurt or ? I’d move Lackey back to the second starter spot. Buchholtz 3rd and Peavy 4th. And have the bullpen ready to go immediately when Buchholtz and Peavy start.

Good series despite the wounded Tigers. Kind of amazing they made it as far as they did.

Yep. A healthy Cabrera and I feel DET would have won.

Yeah, locally they’re whining about Jim Leyland making too many pitcher changes but it really doesn’t make any difference if your bats aren’t there.

Obviously Cabrera hurt the most and Price Fielder feeds off the Cabrera hits and tends to do well too. Tuiasasopo didn’t play at all in the postseason, Avila is all beat up.

Great Series in any case and I’ll be pulling for the Sox in the big show.

DET has the brains and cash to fix whatever problems they have; they’ll be a contender next season.

“...pretentious douchbaggery...”

I LIKE that!!! Haha Excellent phrasing!!! Because Thurston Howell III DOES come immediately to mind...

May I try? How about Ostentatious Asshole-ification...???

“I LIKE that!!!”

Thank you. If the shoe fits...

“May I try? How about Ostentatious Asshole-ification...???”

I like it!

There was also a preponderance of “Elizabeth Warren” stickers on said douchbagmobiles. Guess they want to advertise they backed such a “winner”.

Didn’t some Muppet character say waka waka? That must be where I got it from.

Yes. I had forgotten that until I saw a sign held by a Pirates fan at PNC Park (during the Cardinals/Pirates series). It was a big photo of some Muppet bear (Fozzy Bear?) saying: "Wacha Wacha".

meg, you cannot leave the game early. Stop for coffee on the Mass Pike on the way back. You will be home by 230am.

Great job with your time estimate, Campaign Pete! If we had left Fenway immediately after the game, we would have gotten home at about 2:30 am (including that stop on the Mass Pike).

However we stayed at Fenway until they kicked us all out after the big celebration, which was around 1:15 am.

So with that coffee stop on the Mass Pike, we finally rolled into our driveway at about 3:50 am.

Crazy to do at our age, but it was worth it. Awesome win by the Red Sox!

We were lucky to get tickets (even if the seats weren't together). We wouldn't have missed a minute of the game and celebration for anything. :-)

Morales - WTF?!?!

Hubby and I were at the game on Saturday night. EVERYONE at Fenway said the same thing: "Morales?? WTF?!"

We all know Morales sucks, *and* he hadn't pitched in something like 2+ weeks.

Everyone was angry and incredulous that Farrell was about to throw away Game 6, and force Game 7... vs. Verlander.

If not for that "lucky" grand slam by Victorino, Farrell could have gone down in Red Sox history as another Grady Little.

The boos from the Fenway Faithful when Morales was removed, and made his way back to the Red Sox dugout were *deafening*. Loudest boos I've ever heard there - I don't know if you could hear that on TV. And fans at Fenway generally don't boo as much as they do at other ballparks.

But this was Game 6 of the ALCS, and Farrell almost threw it away.

Freakin' unbelievable.

Thanks, cripplecreek. If the Tigers were going to the big show instead, I'd be rooting for them over the Cardinals.

Once Cabrera and Avila heal for next season, the Tigers again will be a force to be reckoned with. There's a reason they keep making the post-season...

Yes, it’s “Head of the Charles Regatta” weekend; it’s like an early Halloween, except everyone’s acting like a bunch of Thurston Howell wannabes. They’re easy to spot as they drive Volvos with either/or/both “Black Dog” (Martha’s Vineyard) or “ACK” (Nantucket) stickers on them.

The pretentious douchbaggery will be overbearing.

ROTFLOL!!

You can tell I'm not a Boston-area resident. I knew these Regatta events took place on the Charles River, but I always thought these things went on in the spring and summer months.

Didn't know about the "Thurston Howell wannabes" (also John Effin' Kerry-wannabes), and the "pretentious douchbaggery", LOL. But it doesn't surprise me.

We listened to WEEI on the way to Fenway on Saturday afternoon. For awhile the chatter was about the Charles Regatta and about some circus that is apparently in town (?). Thankfully they returned to talking baseball...

Jim Leyland has announced that he’s giving up the manager gig. He’s staying with the Tigers in some capacity but says that at 70 years old he’s running out of gas.

Sounds like he might be pulling for Lloyd McClendon to take over the managment slot.

I agree with everything you've said above re: the upcoming World Series. I hope Morales is traded *yesterday*. I don't understand why he is even on the post-season roster.

I'm not sure I want to see Buchholz return to the Red Sox in 2014. He seems to be forever injured, and appears to be a Head Case at times. Wish we had a starting pitcher like the Cards' Michael Wacha. A young guy with a great future ahead of him - who *takes charge* on the mound, and just gets the job done.

Jim Leyland has announced that he’s giving up the manager gig.

Oh wow... I'm actually sorry to hear that! Leyland is a class act. I thought he was 68, not 70. Just a couple years' difference.

We have the Single-A (short season) Connecticut Tigers minor league team here in Connecticut (Norwich, CT). I'm pretty sure we've seen Jim Leyland's son or grandson play in a game or two (Pat Leyland). Also on the CT Tigers' roster: Ben Verlander, Justin's younger brother.

Al Kaline made an appearance at a CT Tigers game a year or two ago. He was absolutely mobbed by fans...

Leyland says he made up his mind in early September.

Al Kaline still works for the Tigers after all these years.

Ben Verlander and Torii Hunter Jr have both signed on to the Tigers development program.

Another Verlander? Oh dear God! If can hit half as well as his brother pitches...

Happy trails to Jim Leyland. HOF?

Hey Pete, should there be new thread for the WS? What do you think?
