Where's Craig Kimbrel? Not in the game (Oct. Baseball Live Thread)
ESPN ^ | October 8, 2013 | David Schoenfield

Posted on 10/08/2013 10:04:36 AM PDT by campaignPete R-CT

Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings.

Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer ....

Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel."

The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game.

The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using Kimbrel for two innings. "I think six outs isn't something we were even talking about in the dugout," he said after the game.

But what’s the difference between four outs and six outs? Six pitches? Ten pitches? And that doesn’t even factor in that the Dodgers had the 5-6-7 hitters due up in the eighth and the 8-9-1 hitters up in the ninth.

So instead you lost a game with a guy who had a 6.07 ERA last year for the Houston Astros.

... ".. I want the ball." We'll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn't say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.

This should be covered in Managing 101. ... Who cares if it's the seventh inning or the eighth inning or the ninth. I'd rather lose with Carpenter in the ninth inning or the 10th inning or whenever ...

Look, managing your bullpen in a structured manner in the regular season is one thing.

October is not the regular season.

Fredi Gonzalez didn't think the best reliever in the game can get six outs.

He ended up getting none.

“...Seems like its on the uptick...”

We all go home eventually, my good brother.

It’s what we do while we’re here that counts.

Some people spend their lives making misery and heartache for others, and enjoy it. The rest of us do the best we can do with what we’re given, and try to leave our little piece of the world a little better than when it was handed to us. And along the way, we try not to f*** everything up and repair any damage we may have caused to other folks, as well as ourselves.

Maybe that’s the best we can hope for at the end of our line. That whatever little piece-part God set before us, we accomplished it.

Way I see it, the world is FULL of garbage, and we all have to wade through it. Some people just WALLOW in it - joyfully so. It’s impossible to wade through garbage without some of it sticking to us. But there’s also a lot of beauty here as well, and every so often, you come across folks to whom a little of THAT sticks to as well. And it shows in all they do.

Those are the folks you want around you... they teach you how to appreciate the life that you have.

Least that’s how I see it.

never cared for Umpires calling the runner out even when the guy covering second doesn’t have his foot on the bag.

Good grief, I saw that live, it was obvious the guy was safe in real time even without the slowmo. I yelled at the TV, it was sooo obvious, now THAT was a blown call. When they finally replayed it, the guy's foot was over 12 inches removed from the bag when he got the ball, the umpire simply blew that call. That would have given the Tigers another run in that inning with one more out to get.

It was an out of the zone strike.

I DVRd the game, just saw the commentator show it again.

Sorry, go whine somewhere else, how about that blown call on the force out that stopped another run on the Tigers side and gave you another out? Now THAT's a blown call that caused a change in the score to your benefit, not some mythical one strike that YOU didn't like, one that the commentators showed WAS a strike.

Like I said, if you win, you'll be lucky cause the Tigers are a better team. They could have won already, you are lucky to be tied.

And let’s be real here, if Peavy didn’t royally sh*t himself, BOS wins last night. Spare us the BS about moving Jackson down in the lineup. Please...

Pretty much. Those 3 walks hurt him bad. And if Ped didn't boot the ball, the Sox had a DP that would have left the Tigggers with only 1 run in the inning.

Also the Red Sox overall outhit the Tigers 12 to 9, but they were sufficiency spread.

Also in the 2nd, Peavy was getting squeezed at the plate that lead to the big inning. Game 5 tonight and back in Boston for game 6.

Farrell should have taken Peavy out as soon as he started pooping. he’s got Workman, Dempster and Doubront ready to go for long relief. And after looking at the box score, Workman did fine - positive #1.

Pulling Peavy before he let up the 5 spot SHOULD have been done. That’s what sunk the Sox, not DET playing with the lineup.

The hitting BOS did is positive #2.

Neither have you. Tigers won 2 games, have far more hits and base runners than your side does in the series and have better pitching.

You're lucky to be in it at all.

Far more?

Here is what "far more" looks like. LoL.

Meh, one bad game in September, like that matters now, right? So far, the on base percentage and hits have been on the Tigers side in THIS series, go ahead show the stats, you'll be shocked at just how lucky you are to be in the series at all.

And if you don't remember, the Tigers won 4 of 7 of the regular season games.

They'll either repeat that clear head to head advantage, or win it in six. Their slumbering bats have awakened, their pitching is so scary you'll be lucky to score another run, then your beards will all have to go, no one fears them, they just hide a whiny liberal fan base........

Yeah it’s one thing if it’s close but the guy was obviously well off the bag. Ridiculous, willful ignoring of the rules in the name of safety.

Shocked? Modest and negligible at best. Neither side has been consistently knocking the cover off the baseball.

Tigers were out hit by 3 last night, and your team is just as lucky as they didn't blow it again.

And if you don't remember, the Tigers won 4 of 7 of the regular season games.

Or 4 to 3, or 6 to 5 counting this series. However, the Red Sox had a better won loss record than the Tigggggers in 2013.

Middlebrooks sits, Drew still in the lineup. SIT DREW, TOO!

Also, Ross catching - good move.

Yes, it’s a trip he all go on. Unfortunately, when the good ones go, those of us left behind have to endure the true living Hell.

Your words are poetic, Hale.

If the Red Sox don’t swing at Sanchez junk out of the strike zone, the Sox should take this game.

Bogaerts for Middlebrooks? Bogaerts doubled last night.

Agreed! WORK THE PITCH COUNT!!!

I’d still rather have Middlebrooks at 3rd and Bogaerts at SS; as much as Middlebrooks is slumping, he has the potential to hit a bomb. Drew, no.

But that’s why Farrell makes the big bucks...
