Where's Craig Kimbrel? Not in the game (Oct. Baseball Live Thread)
ESPN ^ | October 8, 2013 | David Schoenfield

Posted on 10/08/2013 10:04:36 AM PDT by campaignPete R-CT

Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings.

Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer ....

Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel."

The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game.

The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using Kimbrel for two innings. "I think six outs isn't something we were even talking about in the dugout," he said after the game.

But what’s the difference between four outs and six outs? Six pitches? Ten pitches? And that doesn’t even factor in that the Dodgers had the 5-6-7 hitters due up in the eighth and the 8-9-1 hitters up in the ninth.

So instead you lost a game with a guy who had a 6.07 ERA last year for the Houston Astros.

... ".. I want the ball." We'll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn't say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.

This should be covered in Managing 101. ... Who cares if it's the seventh inning or the eighth inning or the ninth. I'd rather lose with Carpenter in the ninth inning or the 10th inning or whenever ...

Look, managing your bullpen in a structured manner in the regular season is one thing.

October is not the regular season.

Fredi Gonzalez didn't think the best reliever in the game can get six outs.

He ended up getting none.

Peavy getting squeezed on pitches.

Joe West behind the plate?

Big inning for the Tigers. Pedroia boots an easy double play ball.

I never cared for Umpires calling the runner out even when the guy covering second doesn’t have his foot on the bag.

If he was playing at 100%, DET could very well have swept the series.

Cabrera had his career year. Likely not going to have many of these.

Before this game is over, Fister is going to get roped.

“Peavy getting squeezed on pitches.”

He was squeezed so hard he sh*t himself. Best 2 out of 3 now.

I changed the channel; watching Nazis on Military Channel.

I’m out.

The Ump just gave a gift to Fister.

You turned off the game the other night when the Tigers were up by 5 and they lost by 1.

I believe Fister leads the league in hit batters.

“The Ump just gave a gift to Fister.”

Not watching. Flipped to “Nazis vs. Aliens”.

“Cabrera had his career year. Likely not going to have many of these.”

Ehhh, I don’t know about that; he came close to winning consecutive Triple Crowns.

It was a looping high 3rd strike called and out of the zone against Victorino.

This game’s lost; Farrell needs to start thinking “game 4”.

Fox Sports emoted all over the place for slumping the Austin Jackson. Fox: yeaaaaah, Jackson gets a walk - it’s an RBI too LoL.

Farrell needs to bench Drew - he’s useless. Put Bogaerts in; can’t be any worse.

And let’s be real here, if Peavy didn’t royally sh*t himself, BOS wins last night. Spare us the BS about moving Jackson down in the lineup. Please...

Shame about Lauter.

He was a damn fine character actor, and always played a convincing role, no matter what they cast him as.

The article said it best - “instantly recognizable”. Guys like Lauter are the backbone of movies for years and years.

Prayers out for his family. Sucks losing people.

It was a looping high 3rd strike called and out of the zone against Victorino.

The strike zone graph showed by the announcers says you were wrong with that proclamation, that it dropped in perfectly. Quit your whining, you've gotten a lot of the same kind of calls, it's all evened out, you lost because you finally got pounded for seven runs, heck it could have been more without some "bad" strike calls on the Tigers. Frankly, you're lucky to be tied and the ALCS could have been already over.

Looks to me like the Tigers are simply a better team, and if they win, it won't be pretty to watch the liberal Red Sox fan base whine for the rest of their lives.
