I was in Walmart the other night and saw something I did not know was available. As I was standing in the checkout line a woman was using her Food Stamp EBT card to buy stuff and at the end of the transaction she was able to get money back on the EBT card like you can with a debit card. I enquired about this and was informed that a change had been made by Government that permitted this. So you can get a cash back on a EBT Card then are able to buy things not on the approved list like tobacco products and alcohol. So another reason for me to hate paying my taxes.
This is how they able to use them in Strip clubs and Casinos.
</sarcasm>
It isn’t allowed.
The SNAP and TANF benefits are from separate accounts.
The person simply got cash from the TANF side, which is what it is — a cash debit account.
There is no cash back from the food side.
Seriously, it appears that EBT cards are now used for both the teh “Food Stamp” program and for “Welfare” in general. The Food Stamp money can only be used for food. The Welfare money is available as “cash back” etc....
Are you kidding me? So they can get $50 back and go spend it on drugs, and WE ARE SUPPORTING THIS? Can any congressperson bring this up, can a Sean Hannity put this on TV?
Even low info liberals wouldn’t want to straight up give people cash. Even the most starry eyed do-gooder wants them to have food and shelter, not pot and meth.
I see all manner of people using these EBT cards. In the paper this morning though I see the Farm Bill has expired and I wonder what is going to happen if those EBT cards don’t get reloaded next month or whenever the Agriculture Department’s money runs out?
The pressure is going to be on now to make some sort of deal.
Been going on for at least a year. We have a elderly neighbor on assistance (EBT). He was delighted that he could get cash and buy what he whatever wants. As he put it “being stuck with buying food alone made life difficult”.
I had to walk away.
Well you got me, it’s too complicated for me. How do these two programs work?
They’re not withdrawing money from food stamps, ie. SNAP benefits, it’s some form of cash welfare benefits either from your State or the Federal Government. EBT stands for Electronic Benefits Transfer and isn’t limited to food stamps.
So, the government “changed” the rules such that they are able to simply withdraw cash from the treasury.
Isn’t that special?
Beats 40 acres and a mule, doesn’t it?
Did you just find out there is such a thing as welfare and people can get cash from it?
That is almost like co-mingling of funds.
Does that also mean that those cards were not shut off for the shut-down?
People who get “welfare checks” no longer get checks.
They get the money through an electronic transfer, which is cheaper than printing and mailing checks.
The idea is the same, the execution is different.
There are two types of benefits. One for foodstamps and one for cash benefit (welfare). You can buy anything on the cash benefit.
Thanks for the info.
"Food Stamps" = SNAP
Welfare = TANF
You can Google the acronyms and find out all about them.
Thanks for the info
Most people on GA (General Assitance) no longer receive a paper check. Instead, the funds are added to their EBT card and they can then withdraw cash using their card.
I have a friend that was a Mailman, now retired, and he said that the beginning of the month was when all the Welfare recipients would be out waiting by the mailbox to get their checks.
Maybe the Postal Workers Union complained about their carriers being harassed so they went to plastic instead of mailing out checks.
