A rousing rock music rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner."
Didn’t click, not interested in another torturing of the National Anthem by an aspiring cover band no matter their bonafides as vets or whatever. From Hendrix forward, the need for “musicians” to imprint their stamp on this piece is just uncalled for, IMO. There are few that can do it right (Hendrix was not one, IMO, my baby boomer peers can just suck on it) and everybody else needs to put down their mike and their “axe.”
btt
I’d actually like to see them at the Super Bowl
I woke up this morning thinking of this anthem.
I thought of how it reflects the relatively strong gospel sense of early America. Many groups of Christians who broke off from the mainstream because they devoted themselves to a manner of worship that got not just the official frown but active (and un-Christian) mistreatment from the older congregations they had lived among, came to the shores of the USA. The result was a unique gospel environment, certainly badly and often tragically flawed (chattel slavery anyone?), but one which had only been rivaled in the 1st and 2nd century church. The whole song can be easily interpreted via biblical metaphors.
I agree the traditional melody, which this band frequently leaves behind, carries the sense better. But don’t be so quick to pooh-pooh the attempt to carry the spirit in vessels that aren’t traditional. Even if it fails, we understand what they mean. If we do not like the format, our answer should be to improve it.
And incidentally, the fact that the original manages to harness the tune of the very pagan “To Anacreon In Heaven” — and give it a sober kick-ass power that it never had as a drinking song — is a testimony to the conquering Christ. Christ does not stand on worldly ceremony and is not daunted at all from His resolute mission by small minded people’s hoots at Him (though He is grieved). He owns the entire world. He paid for it. We (as Christians) are in a mop up operation now, clearing out the devils as God sets up the battles which also train us. Those who all their lives stubbornly refuse to join the spiritual revolution, the revolt against Satan, will go to where their captors will also go, which is to infernal regions.
It is very well done and gave me chill bumps. But I'm still an old rocker at heart! :)
IMO, unless it is played sung or presented properly and CORRECTLY, it is NOT our national anthem.
I’ve read and re-read your post to ensure I’m understanding your point and I think you need to read to the end of The Book where Christians gain Heaven while this world passes away with its various demons and Satan. Christians have no battle for this world (i.e. no “mop-up operation”) but do have a battle to claim souls for the Kingdom. The world has already stands condemned, the only hope is for those called out of it by Christ who owns the Church as His Body.
You’ve attached way more import to both the National Anthem and my post than even I could. It’s OK to disagree on a performance or performer without making it a test of faith and salvation.
As we've said about the liberals for years, who gets to decide what is proper and correct?
I think you are reading claims into what I am saying that are larger than what I am making. Try to keep the patronization to a minimum would you?
This mortal coil is but a temporary stage and will, as you note, give way to an eternal unshakeable Jerusalem. Still, Jesus bought the world of souls in it. It’s up to them to accept the payment, or refuse it and go to hell.
I HAVE read the end of the story — but I in turn beseech you to consider Romans 1:20 carefully. It describes God’s expression of Himself in the creation, before the famous sequence of degradation. He’s visible as metaphors in the Anthem.
Well, I’ll stick up for you. I am a HUGE Jimi Hendrix fan to this day & I didn’t care for it, either (At 13 or 14 yrs old, I was pretty indignant).
I don’t care if anyone thinks I’m a purist or tighta## or what. Some things are sacred. I wouldn’t like it if anybody messed with Dixie, either.
And by the way, do not ignore the wonderful fact that God can illustrate His dominion right in this temporary creation by conquering the use of resources that had been dedicated to sin. As a simple example think of the meat sold in idol temples in Paul’s day. Paul did emphasize that this meat could be legitimately used by mature Christians who understood that Christ had ultimate authority, even over this now hell bent decaying creation that is “condemned” to pass away. However he also emphasized that immature Christians may need to refrain because they still view the meat as an offering to idols, i.e. demons. And that mature Christians need to show gracious consideration to their immature brothers by not flaunting this capability in their presence when it could be misunderstood and hurt those brothers (as you, apparently, misunderstand me).
Anyhow I don’t know about “test of faith” as you accuse, though it certainly is a feature of advanced faith to be able to see such things as I see. I’ve been drilled by decades of hard times with no human, only God, to help. And it’s that experience that has taught me what God can do.
Yeah ... we’re the brave! Always have been, always will be.
I love this version — it’s got sturdiness.
You claim “patronization” then proceed to add on another layer of meaning within the National Anthem while proclaiming me to be the weaker brother because I can’t see that???
Wow...just...wow. I’m glad you feel so strongly in your faith and your patriotism, I fully support both and don’t wish to create division so I guess I’ll take my leave now. I’ve got meat in the smoker for this afternoon’s tailgate. If you’re supporting a particular college team, I hope you have a great game today, too.
As is often said: there is no accounting for taste. The people who say an artistic work is terrible and those who say it is wonderful should refrain from going at one another’s throats. If you don’t like it, and it’s not obviously a sin, then leave it to others who may be better inspired.
I’m directing you to notice that the entire creation is built of metaphors for God and God’s work. Romans 1:20. A biblical minded generation gave rise to the work we know as the Star Spangled Banner, and approved it. It shows. If you don’t like to be patronized, then don’t patronize someone else then lam it out of here when it gets too hot in the kitchen for you.
“Add on another layer” fooey. It was present, BENEATH the surface. People speak out of the overflow of the heart. The heart of that age was more godly than that of this age.
OK, I’ll stop here at a trilogy.
When you eat your smoked meat think of the sacrifice of Christ. And think of heavenly joy that will come from partaking of Him forever at “the end of the story” which you said I needed to read.
You’re welcome!
